« on: October 08, 2010, 08:21:55 pm »
Another gutter vac question, recently bought one and i am wondering how you all power them.Am i ok using the customers sockets ,because i have been told they are not really suitable to use on a domestic sockets which may be correct as a job i have done today using all 3 motors for 20 mins the socket and my extension cable were feeling a little on the warm side.

I use a generator as if the customer is out and you trip there circuit breaker (connected to the fridge in the garage) you will be in trouble!!!

I know because i have done that (lucky the customer was in)

you need to buy an RCD cable mate which has a thermal trip for when it gets over heated.

but ALWAYS make sure you completely unwind the cable every time you use the gutter vac,  even if you only need a few metres you must completely unwind it all  otherwise its gonna get really hot and trip

Absolute codswallop!

The tripping of an RCD (the rest of us call it a 'fuse'), will ONLY occur when the rating is exceeded.  Can ONLY happen if you have too much going on at the other end.

I am part 'P' registered and know this from several manuals.  Get yourself a higher rated extension, OR only use direct from the customers' fuse board/socket, I think.

PDh..Why were you using all 3 motors? I've had my omnivac for over a year and have never used all 3 motors for any job yet.

The one i tripped was on a "spur" and not a "ring main"  ???

So if you are not sure would it not be better just to run from a geni just for your own piece of mind?

Yes. If on a spur, you could be piling up trouble, as you don't really know what else might be running on that spur. If it's a fridge, then no big deal, but if an oven, for example, could well trip the fuse.

Genny will always work of course, but you have to carry the damn thing about/fuel it etc, but does give piece of mind.

your the one talking absolute S.H.I.T.E.  Granville,   I got my info from a facilities manager with a background in Electrical engineering  not some grade p look at me I'm an electrician w/c

he showed what happens when the RCD reel is not fully unwind and withing 5 mins the gutter vac tripped and the unwound reel was red hot.

refer back to your manual Granville and fer fer fetch your cloth  :D

Type this into ebay "Loncin LC5000 5kva electric start Generators 110/230v" This is the geni i have!!! It may be overkill but it does me well ;)

Also i have fitted wheels to it, so it is easier to load/unload

Mine is 4200watts. It has 3 1400watt motors. I haven't really looked at the sticker.
