Aquarium heaters do not work!
« on: October 03, 2010, 12:42:31 pm »
I have had 2 X 300w heaters in my 600 litre tank for 20 hours now.... !!  and its ony tepid , not warm.

so in my opinion they will do nothing for those cold frosty nights ,

really think i need to invest in L5 HEATER.

But as that is hot water on demand , the water in the tank will be cold all night,

wanted to kill 2 birds with one stone really.

Well, its not pure for one... but i was thinking the heaters in my water tank would heat the water..... and stop the van freezing overnight,

not a chance.

L5 heater connected to a small aquirium pump on a timer, 5 mins on every 1hr and then on for however long before you go to work.

Simon.

Or more expensive to run but cheaper to install an immersion heater.

Aquarium heaters are designed not to cook the fish,.. so hot water can't be expected!

They are low power (cheap to run) and tepid is more than enough to keep frost away.

tepid water may keep frost from the tank ....but that never froze anyway ... i was led to believe that a setting on the heater of 32c would warm the water ,i never expexted boiled water.... just warm.

and i thought that would in turn., warm the van , or at the very least the... the blooming tank.

Also its tepid only after 20 hours,

so 8 hours overnight is no good at all.

just thought i would let people know.

i thoght hot water was not good to be pumped through pump, hot water systems heat water after pump , before reel , i might be wrong though.

Hi

I have van heaters , just thought i would try to make my tank act as a radiator, plus have warm water too..

maybe i need to half empty my tank so it works better.

I have a 700 litre Ionics delivery unit fitted in a Renault Trafic.

Last winter I totally drained my system every night, I took the DI filters off and put them in home with poles & hose real, this takes about 5 minutes.

I have a static set up in my cellar, 2 loft coffin tanks holding 554 litres in each, wrapped in insulation jackets, each tank sits on 3 inches of polystyrene.

I put two 300w heaters in each tank and it kept us going upto about 3pm each day before hoses started to freeze!! that was on the coldest days.

Hope this helps!

Regards

Simon

I have successfully used pond heaters as frost protection but at 300w you'll not get hot and as mentioned above it is not to fry the fish!

Insulate your van tank - it worked for me last year - along with an oil filled rad in the van for frost protection.

If you want hot stored water you need 240V and a 3000 watts immersion element. (ie mains supply)
It's a game of three halves!
