The smell of rotten eggs!
«

I left one of my leisure batteries on charge for too long in the garage.
I've just gone in there and it stinks of rotten eggs!
So disconnected the battery and checked the cells, bugger they are low.
This battery is only about 6 months old and to be honest I never bothered checking the cells before.
So ive just topped it up and will charge it for a few hours to see how it goes.
I reckon its knackered though.

I was told it overheats and bends the plates
Think I might check all my batteries tonight :

Yeah Ive heard the rotten egg smell is a gas from the overheating plates.
I probably should have checked the cell levels before now but this battery has not had a load of use.
It has been on charge for a few days because it didn't seem to have much juice but I think i've over cooked it.
Just thought I would post it incase anyone else comes across this in the future.

No i've been using a 12v 8 amp charger.
However I think the moral of the story is to fairly regularly check the water level of your battery cells.
I didn't with this particular battery because it hasn't had much use and is only around 6 months old.
It's still under warranty anyway so if it isnt any good after charging this time I'll dig the receipt out and take it back to the shop to see if I can get a replacement.
Might buy one of them intelligent battery chargers while im there
