To be a mod or not?

Do you fancy being a moderator?     Would you vote for me if there was a vote to be had?

Maybe.

It would be entertaining, but I don't think you would really "moderate".

If you wait a short while you can see this thread get moderated. ;D

Having modded on here for more than a year and a half, I can tell you, its not as easy as you might think.

Deciding to remove something or not is always a tricky decision, there's a fine line between allowing freedom of expression and preventing personal attacks.  And moderators often get slagged  off and dragged into arguments, not to mention blamed for things that go on!

This is the busiest of all the UK forums, and as such, it's also the most difficult to moderate.  Knowing what its like from personal experience, my hat is off to the chaps who have taken up the mantle since I left, keep up the good work!

when Philip left, i told mike i would do it

now i will explain my net history (from the days of the 33.6 modem ;))

ive been admin on a few boards, some have been successfull, some have failed and fallen to the information highway hardshoulder :), i currently have 2 fairly successfull boards, 1 is football based and the other has been featured in "net" magazine (if people remmber i took a few months off the window cleaning forums to explore other online projects, well 1 is a roaring success ), i wont list them, as i started a window cleaning forum, a fully packed board with arcade and the works, only to have it ruined by "jealous spitefull people from here and "the pro site" ::) i put alot of work and man hours into it, and to have it ruined was just really out of order

Ive Mod'd on a fair few boards for others, 1 of the boards is 1 of the most successfull tech message boards on the net :)

as i am online most evenings, i thought i would help out

alas, Mike said "no, as you promote the self build DIY WFP route"
it would be a conflict in interest as he sells systems

so would i take on the mod's job, i would a few months ago, but now, i am not sure, got another idea for a forum, and will have a punt at it

Might as well, Matt - you know what you're doing.  I remeber your forum, those games were addictive.

Forums really have transformed the window cleaning community - (I'm still amazed that Newsnight revisited window cleaning because of the storm that resulted on the forums) - for a fragmented thing like window cleaning, you really do need them.

I'm sure there are other fragmented groups around that have been brought together by forums.  I think they're absolutely great.  I think that if it weren't for forums, the window cleaning industry would be about 2 years behind from what it is now.

I don't get the conflict of interest thing or the reasons why anyone would want to slag off another forum.

Either we clean with traditional methods, wfp, or a mixture of both. So anyway it's looked at there is always a vested interest.

As for having pop at a forum - my view is is you don't like it, don't go on it. There's another w/c I don't go on for my own reasons but I don't slag it off because some find it uselfull and enjoy using it. If it is that bad it will vannish anyway in due course of time.

As for sunny delightfull Graham, why should he not be more than capable?

His postings can be funny, informative, odd, weird, offensive even, but they are at least thought about before hand.

He would get my vote as would Matt.

As for me being a mod, (very unlikely) I'd love to but I don't have the time.

Cheers

matt

Graham ,

well i voted yes because i did not want to upset you ,as i know how sensitive you are  ;D

and you have such a caring attitude   ::)

i think Tosh and Ian are doing a great job at the moment ,and if you do it who is going to moderate you.that means you would have to punish yourself everyday,
and i would not like to see you dragged away to the nut house for self harm.  :'(

as you can see i had a big dilemma posting my vote.

so now i dont really know   ???

Wouldn't want to be a moderator, nor a zookeeper for that matter ;D
Do they have elections - I would like to vote if someone had a mandate of max 10 posts a day ;)

No and no! (For me and for Graham.)

A forum has certain similarities to a classroom and I think Graham's place is at the back of the class dodging the blackboard duster playing cards and making the occasional incisive witty remark to bring the swots and the stuffed shirts down a peg or two.

My place is two desks to the left of him and one row forward, not so good at cards or dodging the blackboard duster but prepared to listen to teacher most of the time while occasionally throwing paper darts at various class members.

Graham is the sort that could be useful to the class by being made a  prefect in a "poacher turned gamekeeper" kind of way. (Perhaps he should moderate when Ian or Tosh are away on holidays!) ;D
It's a game of three halves!

Educated reply, I thought.
Are you his Dad, by the way?

Not a bad subject for an idle thread.
Where do we see ourselves/eachother in class?

That doesn't bother me.  I'm really thick.

A joke!!!  Honest guv.  To be really honest though, I have considered handing my notice in.  Some evenings I'd prefer just to have a 'cup of tea' and read the threads I'm interested in and not delete or amend post after post (sorry, Graham); normally on a Friday evening.

It's impossible to keep everyone happy all of the time, because different people expect different things here.  Some like it serious.  Some like it chatty.

Also, I'm still very new to the trade of window cleaning, and I've still much to learn and I think it's great reading about everyone elses trials and tribulations.  So I really like this forum, therefore I withdraw my vote of, 'No' and change it to a 'Yes'.

I vote give Tosh a holiday

If we all send a quid, I'm sure he could make it back to Geordieland at least!

I can really understand that. I was a union rep on the railways and sometimes people just don't understand why or how decisions are made and don't have the full picture and it's not them that has to make that decision.

That's why I'd never be a moderator.

Tosh mate - I think you do a very good job for free (which is often forgotten I think)and you won't ever please everyone so don't worry about it.
