black lines on bull nose of stairs
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:36:32 pm »
Neighbour asked me to take a look at there stairs, they had 80/20 fitted with new underlay jan 2010 by april/ may the black lines had appeared. told them my guess was the underlay giving off gas.

Called the company guy turns up and told them faulty batch of carpet?
Replaced it end of may just been told tonight that its comming back again

So wool 80/20 cream with like bird egg speckeles £25 sqm no children, pets non smokers shoes off in the porch,  black lines where the pile opens up on the turn of the stairs any thoughts. as its not draught marks.

my guess is they are not vaccuming around the nose ,most people only vac the flat surface,s , add to the fact that the carpet is streched around the nose and you are looking deeper into the pile ,hence a darker appearence.

have you ever noticed how the nose of carpeted stairs look darker after you have cleaned them, and once dry look much brighter.

Is the front door facing the coast and is it quite near it?

Pete yes it is 0.6 miles south east and you would fall in the dry dock ;D

The reason i mentioned gas  is a slight smell comming from the underside of the carpet i lifted a corner at the top of the stairs and the underlay is as black as a car tyre & shiny in patches like coal.

Thats the best i can describe it i havent a clue thats why i posted

Off gassing causes a yellow colour and usually only under furniture etc where the gas can't escape.

Not sure if what I am describing is the same thing but I have occasionally noticed that when cleaning the nose a black  horizontal line appears AS I CLEAN the area. It's not a residue of dirt because it gets worse the more wet passes I make.

I've assummed that it is because it is an area which takes extreme wear from where the foot slides over the nose on a piece of the carpet that is stressed and bent and perhaps a relatively large amount of pile has been eroded from that point.

I've never had a complaint from a client although the marks have seemed to be "shouting" at me when reviewing the cleaning with the client. As Geoff says perhaps the issue dulls down/fades away as the carpet dries and the pile settles as the client walks up and down stairs a few times.
