first of all you need to submit it to google, through google wbmaster tools, they will then give you a piece of code to insert in the home page, so they can verify the site belongs to you.

then submit a sitemap, so that google can navigate your site, and allow it to be crawled,

this will the index pages of your site

What software did you use to make it? I had a quick glance & your source code looks very Google unfriendly,... very few keywords are visible.

Personally I'd say scrap it & start again using a decent html editor like net objects or dreamweaver (NOT frontpage!)

In internet explorer if you go to the "View" menu & click on "Source" it will show you the code that the webpage is mad up of.
Google reads this code & dismisses most of the bits that don't display on the screen,.. then it counts how many times you use each word (the actual process is a lot more complex, but you get the idea). If you use the words "window cleaner" a lot throughout your website, Google will recognise this as an important phrase,... you should also list the names of towns where you work. When someone searches for a window cleaner in your town in google, results are shown of websites that have these key phrases included a lot.

Done my WebPages in Dreamweaver as for optimisation SEO  just a bit of reading it is  quite simple to do most important thing page title reflects what the page is about and not your company name unless you are Argos or comet.
Use H1 tag is heading tag which is Text  in your page for important parts which are key words H6 which is your closing tag.
Also in your page name by which I mean it in a browser after www.your site /carpet cleaning for example.
Also when doing your pages give your picture a name not JPEG 34 and its key words again.

And use the alternate text this describes your picture for people who are blind and have pictures turned off and using  text reader will describe the picture Google cannot see pictures but can read the text more keywords.
Just look at any website right click the picture click on properties you will see what I mean it would normally say missing if you do all this and more and you are the person has the most interest in getting your pages up and you will get to page 1

I have "pinged" your site. This basically means letting the search engines that it's there.

It is now indexed by Google which is the first bit (it was not before yesterday for some reason, despite being a "google site"). That means that they are aware of it but does not yet mean it is ranked.

To check if something is indexed you type in site: followed by the www. bit,  into the search box on Google.

For ranking, you need to follow the advice above.

There does seem to be something in the code that sites don't like but as I've never used Google sites I do not know much about it.

I suspect you might not have access that will allow you to edit the html code on your google site. I have never used these and I can't be certain.

Probably your better option is to go for a low cost website hosting (£2 - £3 per month) and re-create your website using Adobe Dreamweaver (if you are serious about developing your website this software is worth the investment). Then follow the advice from Mark.

Websites hosted for free are quite a pain to maintain and develop anyway.

I agree. I don't think you can edit the code.

A friend uses Blue Voda and they actually use their own file extensions which only get changed to .html when they are published (to Blue Voda's hosting service).

If you want to alter anything, you have to go into the server and edit the code there. If you want to add a video in say FLV rather than SWF or windows player, you have to do it server side. As soon as you re-publish, these get wiped off. It drives me nuts but he loves it because it's easier to use (well he thinks so anyway).

For starting out, these systems are OK but are difficult to edit later.
