The problem with that jouk45 is that you have to carry your reel out of the van and into the garden. The reason i want the reel mounted in the van (on the roof) is so im not lifting it in and out of the van and also to save floor space.

Its a good idea though

Seems a good idea at a glance Jo, but what a hassle, especially doing a row of houses.

what happens if you're working on the other side of the road with that crane thing?
Looks a bit silly to me, but each to his own!

I'm surprised you haven't got straight forward replies on this. Roof mounting is better by far than any other solutiion.

I watched moems video and it was good of him to put it up.It was well engineered but i felt the positioning of the reels was poor and would be awkward to reel in, and possibly awkward to walk away from with the hose following.

Mounting reels in the rook wasn't my idea, and i see that moem says this (his)was 2.5yrs ago. There have been several quite brilliant examples of thix posted on here. One had a turret.

I feel that the turret is not necessary. The criteria is that on arrival at a job you grab the pole. put the harness over your shoulder and walk away. You should't even notice any pull of the trailing hose.

On completion you walk back and wind in.The winding in by handle (i'm electric) should not involve any bending or strecting and be very easy to reach. The reel should face the direction of the hose- unless of course you have a roller guide.

All that's really needed are some cross members in the roof, and then the reel, usually upside down mounted to this.

Gardiners sell some snazzy reels these days that would be dead easy to mount to a cross member in the roof.
Tad pricey though  ;)

To do it properly costs money.IMO it's worth it.

If i had a bad back money wouldn't matter.

I keep meaning to email gardiners, i have a product idea for him. It's just the harness i use and a hook to keep the pole hose off the floor, but probably a £20 sale item that he could knock up for about £3, and completely change the way that most people work for the better and make their poles last twice as long.

He will probably say it's too dear (the £3 manufacturing cost that is) and tell me to come back with something at £1.50 that he can punt at £30.

I nicked the harness idea off Ian Giles.I remember him saying he arrived at the job put the webbing over his shoulder, grabbed the pole and walked away. That sounded cool.

The other person who had a method for this was luke (rupert the hair) he was just a stupid kid but he had some very good ideas. He attached his to his belt.

For a brilliant DIY version do the following.

1. one length of hose about one and a bit metres depending on how fat you are.Inside it some washing line type string.

2. Using the string attach the 'loop' to the reel hose just before the tap.

3.This hose loop fits over your head and you put one arm through. The tap sits at about your waist level. At a point further up the hose put a hook in, this acts a bit like a saddle horn where you rest the loops of your lasso, or in this case pole hose.

4. If you've done this right you should now look like a distinguished mexican general.

As regards mounting reels you need to put some solid cross members in and attach to these.
