Well that's sold me WFP, egg is the hardest thing to get off and WFP did it.

   Well done Reubens.

Egg yolk, bloody awful stuff, trad or with WFP, when it has dried on it's an absolute pig to get off, usualy means a knife.

Terry,
In a straight race of course Trad will win, but even you would be hard pressed to clean 3 georgian windows (18 panes each window) faster than a WFP, and you are the world record holder.
Initial cleaning, particularly if you have things like egg, paint, silicone or dried putty will always need to be done with trad methods, but standard window cleaning?

WFP for me ;)

This newnight program felt more balanced to me (apart from the egg test) and it did infer at the end of the article that working off ladders,...er, well the writing, if not quite on the wall, is certainly being drafted!!

Did you see that muppett up that ladder with only one of the top stiles in the corner of a window?
And people wonder why they are tightening up the Working At Height regs :-\

Mind how you go now,

Ian....with both feet firmly on the ground!

Allegedly - mind you if the above is true there was egg on Andrew Lees's face - as well as the BBC's windows

I saw the item on News Night, correct me if I'm wrong but was Reuben using Thermo reach and wash I ask this because the motive on the van was red (= thermo pure)?

If it was Then I'm looking into heating my water as I've been trying for several months now to get egg of a customers window and still can't get it all off (I would use ladders but its above a conservatory)

And although the blade was quicker than the brush the brush will always be quicker than the blade when there is more than one window above ground level.

I watched it last night and was VERY surprised Rueben got the egg off, I've never been able to manage it with WFP even going back to it after soaking.

I think Alan is probably right, it must have been a thermopure system, which has just added several thousand pounds to your outlay!!  Not many of us can afford to go down that route.

Some factual stats would be good, like how long did it take each of them and more importantly how much water did Ruebens have to use to get his clean, I bet we are talking a lot more than a standard 7 ltrs per house use.

I am not for or against either system, we use both ladders and WFP, but they are simply tools to get the windows clean and they each have their uses.

People on here seem to be falling into either one camp or the other.  I'm going to make a bold statement:
"Ladders are not a safety risk, it's the people who use them that are the risk"

If used correctly ladders are as safe as any other tool.

How many people get killed or injured crossing the road each year?  Is crossing the road dangerous?  Have the HSE stopped people crossing every road?  No!  They introduced the Green Cross Code so it could be done correctly and safely.  Where it wasn't safe they build underpasses or foot bridges or pelican crossings.

WFP is simply the equivalent of a underpass or footbridge, it is not the only way to do it, simply a safer way in certain situations.  However, if we all complied with the Green Cross Code for using ladders there would be a fewer accidents.

attach unger scrapper to pole

scrape egg / bird crap

soak again

do other side of house

go back and scrub a little with brush, its gone

i ALLWAYS find it works on

I assume he used a scraper.

it would be nice to get a comment from Reuben.

I think we are all interested with this one.

Thermopure to the rescue, I did use hot water as it would of took forever with cold with no time to pre-soak the window.

It took 3-4 min to clean window and frame, the hot water broke down the dirt and egg on the glass quite easy, quite a lot of  time was taken on scrubbing the frame to avoid runs.

The next clean would be done in a third of the time.

It was quite nerve racking !! the scapper was used on the other window and he commented afterwards that his hands stunk of eggs.

Regards

Reuben

Alan,

Daniel Blythen has just started a new thread on a portable water heater if you want to keep an eye on it.

Looks as if it cost about £900 but even so far cheaper than the thermo.

I would agree with that statement up to a point, comparing it to crossing the road is silly though, the analogy simply is not the same.

The ladder is inherently dangerous, sometimes no matter how careful you are, a moments inattention can result in a serious accident. Of course it can be used safely, and most of the time, just as you say, it is the user that is the problem.

Working off a ladder means working at height, if the ladder is wet, even the best shoes can slip off a rung, and we must all have had the odd heart stopping moment, even if nothing untoward happened. But it is when that little slip of the foot that you catch before it goes to far, does indeed GO to far, then it's SPLATT!! time.

Perhaps I am being a bit pedantic here, I think lionheart is basically correct, but climbing and working off ladders IS high risk, and none of us are perfect, climbing ladders day after day, week after week and year after year, you WILL get those heart stopping moments, and for some the heart stops permanantly.

Mind how you go,

Ian

Hi All,
I have just watched the News Night report and what the E.U is trying to achieve is a good idea and is basically common sense.
When I first bought my WFP I used it on every house and it took ages.  Not so much the cleaning of the windows but getting it out the car taking it round the back etc etc, Now I evaluate each house and work place.  First is the safety, Is it safe enough to use ladders? then the speed thing, If there are loads of top windows then out comes the WFP, an example of this, I cleaned a factory in Farnham, All top windows were done using the ladder BUT there was a couple which putting a ladder up was too dangerous so I drove the van round to the windows left the trolly in it and cleaned them with the pole.

So to me I think its a good idea with Safety being the key issue, they are also being very clever, They are putting the onus on the window cleaner.

Thanks
Paul
