winters round the corner!! Widespread frost already at weekend  ???

Just a thought, in the winter especially first thing on upvc windows the water freezes even though i use boiling hot water. i have to dip the aplicator in the boiling hot water and squeegee as i aplicate so as not to have a frozen window.

How on earth do you wfpers using cold water get round that?? no point in it freezing and then you trying to rinse! Do you add an alcohol or something??

Hi mark

The subject of water came up in an earlier thread. (ask Tosh about his gently squeezing technique ;D)

It was pointed out to me that according to the laws of physics hot water freezes quicke than cold water.

I am now waiting till the depths of winter to test this one out.

Better start looking for the neoprene gloves :'(

Freezing this weekend? Where do you live? Norway? Cairn Gorm?

It won't dip below double figures at night down here!
It's a game of three halves!

Hi The Cleaner Service

As the wind and weather systems come from the South West you don't have the mass of the sea where you live to keep things warmer during Oct - May.  :-[

Where I live in Brighton, and honestly I'm not gloating, or pondering anothers misfortune,  ;D  ;D  ;D I'm in one of the best places in the whole UK for a mild climate outside of summer and the greatest number of sunny days during winter.

Get your thermals out mate........

Having writen the above, we do get a lot of seriously windy days during winter due to the fact that the sun doesn't heat the sea up as quickly as the land and the constricting effect of the English Channel plus where the weather systems comes from etc etc.

Last year we lost many more days due to the wind than we did due to rain or snow. At the moment the wind speed here since 6pm is averaging 13mph and gusting up to 27mph. 2 miles away at Ditchling, the other side of the south downs, it's averaging 4mph and gusting to 9mph.

I found by keeping records (I am a weather nerd and have all the stuff to record it) that with ladders we're ok with gusts upto just 11mph and it's not the constant wind speed that is a problem, it's those unpredictable gusts.

To me, that is a good arguement for WFP.

But by the time this winter sets in, we'll be (hopefully) better at using our new self build WFP's and will have ironed the seemingly endless problems.

5 degrees expected where you are  - chilly.

Cheers

Absolutely right Rosskesava - one thing I have unexpectedly found with the pole is that on windy days where I'd not use a ladder I  defo use a pole at 1st floor level. (Above that and it can also catch the wind too much for my puny arms.)

Although it hasn't applied much in mid-summer, during late winter/early spring at least two days a month I continued working with wfp on windy dry days.
It's a game of three halves!

Thanks Ross
I haven't got any sophisticated stuff, but like all w/cs fanatical weather watcher.  We get cold winds here, near The Wash, 15mph tolerable after that uncomfortably risky, 25mph goodnight.  NE wind comes from Nth Pole and feels like razorblades.
I wear serious outdoor gear in Jan/Feb.
Still long way to go yet :) :) :) :)

Hi Malc(G)ould

At least I'm not the only one who founds my arms lacking in the wind with wfp.

Today I saw a wfp bloke doing the 4th floor and I could not understand how he could be holding it at that hieght in the wind let alone actually clean the windows.

Maybe it's just practise? After I've done a few places my neck and arms are like an over stretched elastic band. There again when 5 years ago I started window cleaning I can remember days when I struggled to get down the steps to my front door.

Hi  The Cleaner Service

You often get polar maritime air in winter. Cold and dry. The lands all flat. Glad I live here. One thing you don't get though which we do and which is a big problem - salt on the windows. It can go 3 or 4 miles inland.

Sometimes when it has been very windy we have to change the water in the bucket 2 or 3 times for every house. Often people along the coast here cannot see out there windows especially between Nov - May.

It's good money earner because of the salt but a normal 20 minute job for 3 of us can take an hour and we can't really ask for more money.

At least we don't freeze very often and we've only had snow twice in the last 18 years.

Cheers

You have just reminded me of what it was like cleaning windows in that direction.
I used to live in Boston.
The winters were pretty mean at times. Horzontal rain and all that.  :'(
I find hear in N Ireland that the winters are no where near as harsh. 8)

I live in Spalding, the winters seem milder now than they used to be. Did you move to N. Ireland to get away from all the tension and angst around Boston!!

I,ve been useing WFP for over three years now I normally only loose about 2 to 3 days a year because its below freezing, as long as its just above the water don't freeze.

The main problem that I have is  the hose get frozen over night, even if I wrap it up in blankets ect, I normally stick a electric fan heater in the back of the van about an hour before I start solves the problem and I have a lovely warm van.
