can you JUST
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:10:55 pm »
hi all here's what im bitching about today [not happy unless think its a man thing]
anyhoo  im getting a bit frustrated at cuzys saying can you JUST rub over this time your on . and making that annoying back and forth motion trying to copy us.
and when you say yeah no worries ill only charge you x amount they say WHAT your going to charge me but its just that . and some get real huffed.
if i where a plumber/or if i went into a shop and said ill just have that i couldn't get away with it .
 why are we any different.
so any ideas what to say   coz we all know a punch in the chops [might make you feel better]  isn't the way [or is it]
rugs are the worst and i know they dont take long  but it just seems a lot of people want a little extra for nowt

I always suck my teeth and say "Rug cleaning's a specialist thing and I only do take away service on rugs, let me give you a quote on completion of this job....!"

They never mention it again ;D ;D ;D

The crappy 10 quid off the market polyamide things most of them have are not specialist , so I run over them, normalyy ask for a sandwich or a drink for doing so ( if the kitchen looks clean)
I clean carpets

It's so rare I get asked I can afford to turn "Some" rugs down....

I will do the 6x4 footer cheapo rug but when the rug is almost as big as the room it is in and worth more than my car... Common sense kicks in and I will say it costs extra....

If it's the off-cuts used as mats in halls or sometimes in lounges I'll often say "but of course. I've already factored it in"

Oh, and look extremely hurt ;D as if they were assuming i wasn't going to do a proper job.

Never harms to make them feel (a little bit) guilty/appreciative.

Your spot on there Rog,
Had 2 examples today, 1st one as you mention above, doing quote for whole house, noticed off cut runner by patio doors, customers asks if it can be done as well. as you say, already costed in, so "of course we will madam" or thanks that's great she says.
2nd instance, doing a quote for 2 wing backed armchairs, customer asks if we can "just do that bit of carpet there, where you come into the room", of course we can, so that will just round it up to £x then. Okay that's fine, see you next Friday or whenever it is.
If there isn't enough time to do the job right,  how do we find the time to go back and do it again when the customer is not happy ?   Do it right the 1st Time.

you ask your cuzys for a sandwich or tea in 24years of doing this ive NEVER asked for even a cup of tea .
been offered a few but never asked .
but hey what ever works for you matey
think ill just stick to adding a couple of quid on
god knows what they might do to sandwich before you get it

Hi

Get this a lot with EOT cleaning, a certain LA was saying 'can you just'. problem was each can you just was about £30.oo of cleaning, did 44 jobs for them last august alone, that's £1200 of 'can you just' in 1 month.

Don't work for them anymore, can get a higher ticket price elsewhere and not a 'can you just' in sight.

Regards

What about the opposite. Would you do extra not quoted/asked/paid for?

Today was cleaning a corner sofa and a large rug which covered most of the floor apart from approx 4-5ft either end of the room. Thats all the customer asked to be cleaned.
Home owner had two dogs so everywhere caked in dog hair and dirty paw prints.
They let me in and went off to work so weren't around during cleaning.
Sofa and rug come up a treat making the carpet either end look s**t so cleaned  both the areas.
Took about an extra 10 mins and looked so much better.

Spot on.

I always 'go the extra mile' but it's when they just expect you to do it.

There are 2 sides of thought, and we all dip into both sides as the situation dictates.

Agree, had plenty like that.

Like you say Colin, hopefully they'll appreciate it but I felt better leaving it that way as well being the perfectionist that I am.  :P

one of the staff of an esate agent we work with is known to use as the "can you just guy", it's an ongoing joke we make a bet to see how many can you just he asks when we see him. me favourite was when he had asked for about 5 in the property, simple things like clean banner at front door, then window seal outside, then lampshade in back garden etc, then once he'd left he was still calling to give more can you just's.

it's a tuff one to chose what to do as you don't want the person going else where but you want respect for your work. imo carpet cleaning appears (i'm yet to actually do it myself) like a very well paid job for doing little so can easily afford the extra time for can oyu just jobs. of course doing an extra room is a loss of say £20, but then it's not cost £10 in supplies so not so bad. the guy we sub carpet cleans to often does extra little bits like a small study and customers respond well.
