i did a patio clean a while back and i said id brush a sand/cement compound back into the joints which i had disturbed, which i didnt end up doing it slipped my mind tbh, the chap has got back in touch and iv told him to go for the cementone wide jointing compound and il happily go round and brush it in for him etc
i went round yesterday and cleaned up his front garden wall and steps etc pressure washing and tried to make a start on the patio rnd the back but a lot of the concrete is still very well in place i thought we had blown a lot more of it out.

options

1) just re-joint the areas that have been knocked out

2) knock out everything and re-joint everywhere

to knock out the joints has anyone got any better options than a mallett and chisel/bolster

i was thinkin of using a kangoo or an sds hammer drill with a chisel attachment or would these be too high risk for the sandstone slabs

I would just brush in the areas that are missing the pointing! You can get grey or buff wide jointing compound. Or use magic sand but that only comes up sandy in colour.
I would not go anywhere near it with a kangoo or SDS drill as you are more than likely to cause more damage than good!!!

To be honest most of the time i refer my handyman (as i am only a cleaner) ;)

Good Luck

i went down there the other day alan and was chipping away with hammer n bolster n got nowhere iv messed the chap around and been a bit unprofessional so i just wana giv him a good job hes happy with the actual clean of his patio and conservatory came up great and he was made up.i mite just do the bottom area chiselled out and refill the upper levels that arent as badly affected.iv used the wide jointin compound before and it came up great, i just dont want the job to take up too much time as i didnt account for chisseling out loadsa concrete/cement but dont want it too luck patchy

Whilst I have not used Cementone myself I have several builder associates that swear by it. Brush it in, job done, couldn't be easier. Not sure on the longer term quality as I've only really known of it for a year or so.

Downside for you is that getting a colour match on a part job will be tricky, even though it does come in three colours. The other issue is cost (for a small area), as once opened it has to be used. You can get 20Kg for £29.99 at Screwfix last time I checked.

One last point worth noting is that we explain the risks when cleaning such paved areas. Even when taking as much care as possible there is always a risk of blowing loose compo. If this is made clear from the outset and obvious problem areas identified then there can be no comebacks. We have this included in our T & C's.

As a back up, and at an additional cost to the customer we do have a company that we recommend for repairs / refurb's etc. We used to add a commision but we get work from them and vice versa, it also helps win the trickier jobs.

In this case I would probably opt for pointing with self-mixed compo, unless you are sure of a colour match.
