How do you get yor trainee w/c ?
« on: September 11, 2005, 09:00:33 pm »
Need to recruit but dont know the best way to do it.  Should I pay hugh prices to advertise the post in local paper or use the job centre.

How do you guys overcome the problem with working hours on the run up to the winter.  Do you guarantee say three days work and does that get the dregs applying ?

Do you pay them if they work below the weekly guaranteed hours ?

Any suggestions about payment methods will help me when wording the advert.

i pay £6.50 an hour on a guaranteed 15 hour basis and we are tottally flexible with each other it works out great as when the weather is bad ,we get unpaid time off and extra time to do the work in when it has stopped

David,

Did you have trouble getting someone to commit to only 15 hours a week then ?

Most people need full time to pay the bills.

No i had no trouble as i said that will be the minimum hours and there will be a lot more in the future .if there wifes are in work then it is not to bad and tax credits are superb these days .there is always someone .you can normally find a couple of out of work people in the pub or through your family network.

Based in South Wales Alan - do you know someone who WANTS to work then ?

Past employees have always been PAYE but the irregular winter hours always get them in the end !!!

Has anyone tried New Deal - whats it all about ?  have heard of it but dont know much about it otherthan the job centre pay so much so my thinking was to use the extra to make up any shortfall in wages during the winter !!!

Wadya fink ?

if you go that route i think they want to see training ,health and safety and all liability insurances ,i have not tried it myself ,but a friend of mine pulled out because it was too much hassle. i have not researched it myself

i registered as a new employee with the tax office .my N.i contribution was only £3 for him last week .
liability insurance -- i have just taken a quote for £380 inc public and employers .added him on to car insurance .

i do not send him up a ladder ,i do all that

holiday pay --just set aside £10 week that should cover it for now

sick pay ----my understanding is if you cant afford it ,the gov have to pay it

every thing you pay out is all tax deductable any way.

any more questions and i will answer

Leaflet great Dave.  Personally I dont think it matters how you tell them as long as they get told properly.

Because the techie stuff is so extensive I was told my original Newsletter was far oo complicated and far too detailed for the majority of my customers (No I am not saying they are thick) but they dont need all the info we try to give them.

Good luck with rolling out the wfp - its the best thing I ever did (I dont use ladders at ALL now for w/c) just for the odd guttering clean.
