For what it's worth, I think you are a genuine bloke Tosh.

For the record, some may only require 1 mill.
All my commercial clients require at least 2 million pub liability, minimum.
I understand that is basic.
average 5 million.

Pj,

No problems, mate.  I've only had one contract that required me to up my insurance to 5 Million and that was for a large Hilton Hotel.  Now I don't do it anymore; therefore 1 million should be enough for me.

I'm only 'small cheese', but if 5 Million insurance was required to get some large contract, I'd get it.

But my perception is, (which may be incorrect), that 1 million should be enough for my mainly residential round.  Why pay more, for more cover than I require?

Great link Tosh.

Would suit most residential w/c and commercial who work under 4 stories high as that is one of the clauses that price includes.  Will be using them when my renewal comes up as the 2 mil jump is only £20 or so.

Thanks mate ::)

It works out cheaper for her to get her own - with the same company.  Don't ask me why.  I did it both ways at the quoting stage and it's cheaper to get it seperately.

For 3 of us we pay £576 with a million public liability.

Plus were covered for any damage we do (£50 excess) but only for any windows we are not cleaning but we are for anything else damaged at the same time as a result of and so on and so forth.

Apparently that means if a ladder falls over and breaks something then we're covered.

If I break a window then I'm not covered for that window.

Also, we're not covered above the 4th floor even if it's in a block of flats or offices for anything other than public liability.

Strange insurance.

Ross,

It's not strange really.  When you're talking about millions of pounds worth of insurance; it more the case of dropping your ladders on someone's head, or a pram and brain damaging the baby (God forbid).

If you break a window; you replace it yourself.  The chances are you'll have difficulty in breaking a double glazed window and with a single paned window they're easy to replace.  It wouldn't be worth claiming.

I remember Philip Hanson providing an example about an uninsured scaffolder who dropped a peice of scaffolding from a height and it landed on a babies head; brain damaging the poor child for life.

Adding insult to injury, there wasn't even the compensation available - no insurance - to provide for the child's upkeep and I guess the parents had to rely on what our state could provide.

I broke a huge paine of Victorian glass in a listed building. The insurance paid up and it cost £530 to replace. It was about 8ft by 3 or 4 and curved at the top. All I did was to mop and it just cracked.

Obviously we said that it happened when the wind blew ................. the ladder ..........

The annoying thing was that when we have to show our insurance documents if a company requires it, the bu**ers have written previous claims on it.

As for public liability - I'm still searching for an insurance that covers breakage and working above 2nd floor in a block of flats etc.

I can't find one.

Does yours cover that?

Cheers

Ross

I added this later - the insurance covers damage upto the 2nd floor but public liability only up to the 4th floor. Sorry if what I wrote seemed confusing. It's so confussing. I write a few lines here but on the small print - it's five pages.
