showers screens
« on: August 10, 2010, 06:18:06 pm »
ok so probably a really simple answer but i cant seem to get it right in every house particularly if their shower screen is badly stained.

i am really struggling to get all the those old water marks off some shower screens. we use enviromentally friendly products but nothing seems to work i have googled it and tried everything. thinking i might need something a bit more harsh and then maintain with eco-friendly products?

any ideas?

also how does everyone make sure shower doors arent smeary. they dont appear to look smeary and then i catch the smears from a different angle! im incredibly anal about smears!!

Hi

harpic 100% limescale remover £1.00 at Tesco (at the mo)

Put on the screen either use a green scourer or a metal one, wash straight off and dry with kitchen towel, spray winda cleaner on and buff up.

As for your anal smears... er..um..

thanks very much i will try that. when your maintaining a shower door every week how do you stop it smearing? ive tried vinegar and water with window cloth and tries newspaper but i just cant get the finish i want in some houses. some people have spot lights on the shower and i can see the smears  ???

clearly the smears are on all showers but more visible under certain lighting.  do you spray window cleaner and then dry with cloth or do you use any equipment like window squeegee?

Hi

I ALWAYS use kitchen towel, it soaks up and residue of product and any grease.

Don't forget that in the limescale and water is the dirt, skin and body fat and juices of the people who live there.  :-\

I wonder what Jane R would make of you using harpic 100% limescale remover!!

This just goes to show,

well excuse you!! we always use eco-friendly products, we make our own own air freshener and use alot of other natural products on limescale. some people havent had their show screens cleaned for years so it is near impossible to get the marks off when we first clean their home. i never use anything in anyones house without asking them first.

not that is has anything to do with you as it was a question for help not interference but i always ask my customers if something is not going to come up as clean as it could with some chemicals. this will be the FIRST time i will be using anything other that eco-friendly but i refuse to lower my standards just because bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar doesnt do the job on some peoples showers.

my customers always have the choice and i will NEVER use anything in anyones home without asking.

no no no!

if you live in an hard water area then it will be a bit harder to get the spots off, just give them a good rubbing.

as for the smears!!! no chemical at all!!! its the chemical that is causing the smears! basically you are just moving the chemical around the screen and not taking it off and causing smears.

just window clean it - so sponge and just soapy water - fairy will do and then take it off with a microwipe

Hi

Sorry Martin, totally disagree here.

Limescale is a constant issue down here in brighton, if it stays on it eventually turns to limestone.

An acid based cleaner can get this stuff off a lot easier, i usually use a metal scourer and harpic usualy strips it all off in around 1 minute.

As for the smears, yes it can sometimes be the product, but usually it's the grease from numerous bodies.

i use a homemade glass cleaner (vinegar 20% and rest water pretty much) and a glass cleaner cloth like the ones e-cloth sell. never smears if the glass is clean.

harpic i find works great to get a good amount of it off, but it never does as much as i like and i find it even sometimes makes it worse as the limescale goes white when harpic goes on it. what i use is MDR which can be had for around £8. although it's 8 times more expensive then harpic it lasts more then 8 times longer if used correctly and works better! it's also bio-degradable and a much much nicer product for the cleaner to use. give it a go kelley and i'm sure you'll be impressed with the results. only issue i've had with MDR is it's hard to get without an expensive delivery charge.

martin: i'd have thought the only way the metal scourers are going to get the ingrained marks off is by scratching the glass?

H Surrey

Never found that to be honest.

The reason the limesclae goes white is that it is breaking it down.

squirt on, scrub, rinse off, dry, spray glass cleaner, wipe dry and it's done.

I have used this method for around 3 years, works fast.

Also use this on SS sinks, wash off immediateley, window cleaner to buff up.
takes about 1 minute.

kelley,

To get rid of those annoying smears we just purchased a professional squeegee, one of those that window cleanes use. If you do purchase one make sure your rubber blade is well maintained and is always very smooth.

It has saved us alot of time, especially when doing regular weekly clean. Although not all screens are straight ( can be round curved etc, it's amazing whar people like those days) then in this case if we do come across ant like that we just use a microfibre cloth, again those that window cleaners use, very large ones about £7.00 but you can have them forever as long as they clean. When cleaning them dont use any fabric conditioner if you do it leaves smears and use least of washing powder as possible. Can even try using soap nuts if you want to be propa eco.

Hi Kelley

I know what you mean with first time cleans.  We also use eco friendly products which can mean more hard work at times.  We use Evans Ever Fresh Pot Pourii washroom cleaner see evansgreentick.com for more details and a fast net sponge this does the job really well and smells wonderful.

Hope this helps  :)

Hi
i use a spray bottle with a few drops fairy and a dash of white vinegar filled up with water for screens. spray loads on then use a sponge to work it in or scourer if really grimy then buff up with a cotton glass cloth. sketchley or similar. it works for us .

Have you tried enjo products. They are a bit pricey but come highly recommended by friends who run B&Bs especially the bathroom ones.

As Martin said but one difference, we use Mr Muscle Shower Shine for the final rinse/buff up.

Its great for regular work, as a lot of you do regular weekly cleans I would seriously recommend it, once you have the shower screen cleaned all you are doing is keeping it topped up, it seems to break all the fats and hard water down so it doesnt stick

We are in a hard water area and use it all the time at home now, keeps all the clag off the shower screen and the taps, tiles etc keeps it all clean and shiny.

We only found it by accident we did EOT and tennant had left it on site, agent wasnt bothered about all the stuff, it was all to be thrown away so we used it. Funny what you find by accident on these jobs.
