i have just installed a 250l tank in the back of my volvo estate.there is usually 2 of us in the car a treble ladder a small `A` frame and the usual other stuff.

the Question how far can i fill my tank without going overweight  ?

look in your manual and see how much load capacity you have. work out how much you your mate and all your equipment weigh (excluding tanlk) then take that away from your load capacity and you will have the spare capacity. finally 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram. Then you should know how much you can carry.

well 250 KG is close to 40 stone in weight

thus its the same as 3 fair size blokes sat in the rear of your car

a touch too much for my liking that , when you add the ladders and such

I put a 50 gall (aprox 300 ltr) tank in the back of a Montego estate plus a trolly on the back with 25 ltrs plus Me (heavy) plus a lad (feather)

Always low to ground at start of day  but it did get higher as the day went on
( never checked if it was legal)

Hey Dave , what i usually do is load the car or van with as much as you want , if the wheels fall off down the road then you know its too much !

In my case the exuast (bad spelling) started the day scaping the floor but was OK after the first hour..

Which Volvo? 240, 740. 850?

I had a 240 estate when I was trad and now I've got a Honda accord which is similar but the back slopes like a Mondeo.

I carry 200 litres in 25 litre barrels. 2 in passenger footwell, 6 in rear estate space along with trolley, pump and battery. Trad gear on back seat and light ladders on roof.

So - me 80kg, water 200kg, trolley, pump, pole and battery 25kg, trad stuff 5kg, ladder 20kg

All up 330kg. I could physically squeeze another two barrels in, but car would wallow like a whale and ground tow-bar and exhaust at times. I reckon with your passenger you're pushing it a bit. Iwouldn't exceed 200 litres if its a 240, may be the full 250 if a 740?

  I used to put me, 250 ltr water, trolley ladders etc in my mk3 escort, got it grounded on kerbs a time or 2!

Its the 240
i will just fill 2/3 full for now and fill up on site for bigger jobs .
thanks for all your help .i will be getting a van soon ,but that  may take a month or so .

just found out in usa at least it is 550kg max .thats including people luggage full ashtray etc
