Seeing as fuel is so expensive and on the increase the question is. Have any of you thought about running your diesel car on cooking oil. I know this can be done and from what I know the car will run ok (so Top Gear say).
Does anyone know if there are any longlasting problems?

I wont be doing it yet if at all but fuel is going crazy right now and we all seem to do a lot of mileage in our work. There must be an alternative other than buying a LPG car which the government will put high tax on in the next 5 years.

  I dont believe there are any long lasting problems with this, but you will have to strain the oil and put an additive into it, cant remember what that is though, sure you would find plenty of info on the net. You also have to pay tax on the oil used.
  Could be handy for me as I clean at a chip shop!

I see a guy on ebay selling a van on cooking oil a while back and it did say in the add it was cheaper to run but did not go as fast.
And he probably smelt like a chippy at the end of the day.

But we've got a plan to instal a basic cooker to fry our own dinners for those days when we cannot get to a cafe.

I know of a chap who has a camping stove in his van and he makes himself a fry up everyday in between jobs he not a window cleaner though he's a delivery driver.
He reckons it quicker than going to a cafe or going home.

Hi , i used to work for a company that supplied cooking oil , the boss heard of the idea of running on the oil and promptly went about filling 2 of his brand new renault mascotts with the oil , they both got to the end of the road and broke down , it turns out that some engines just wont run this way , its somthing to do with the design of the latest diesel injection systems.
You may get lucky , but if yours dont go , then what you lose while the van is in the garage getting drained and flushed is probably what you would of saved on diesel for the year anyway !

I thought using cooking oil as an alternative to deisel was interesting enough to do some googling for:

Don't go pouring veggie oil into your fuel tank without reading about it first.

Also, by law, any fuel you use to power your vehicle, you have to pay the fuel duty on.  Even COOKING OIL if you use that to power your vehicle.  Using it  without paying tax, would be the same as using heating oil (which apparantly is the same as deisel, the only difference being it has a red dye added and is not subject to tax).

So cooking oil being a food is not taxed; until you put it into your vehicle; then it becomes liable for tax; in the UK.

I read somewhere that this was a bit like 'childrens clothing' which is also NOT taxable; purchased for use by a 'small adult', who then has to pay the tax on the clothing if he wears them!
