Do you clean the outside of your reel hose before putting it back in the van?
Always.

I third that. Clean it with a cloth as i reel it in and i can guide the hose neatly onto the reel too.

i only clean mine when i accidently pull it through dog muck ,
sometimes i wipe the first few mtrs,
i use a climbers karribiner to clip into hose whilst reeling in , so my hands stay clean .
it also makes it easier to reel in esp. at an angle
