Yes you can get free banking from the Co-Op, but you have to be a member of the Federation of Small Business(FSB) to receive the benefits.

Which include paying in unlimited amount of cheques with no fees attached and paying in upto a maximum of £4000 with no charges.  After that though I think they charge 40p for every £100 paid in.

i changed from lloyds as the charges were just rediculous, 20p per check, 50p each time you deposit, it would have worked out about £30 per month after the 2 yr free banking ended.

im with alliance and leicester now its mostly free (soon to become santander) and like the fact i can deposit at any p.o.

the only the gripe is the £7.50p charge for bounced chqs, had about 4 in a month the other day, not happy.  
I changed the tariff to electronic and cut my bills down by 3/4
