Fair pay for night work

Have a problem with the amount of contracts we now have, and the staff we have.
Currently staff work split shifts, eg 6.30am-9.30 am  4.30pm  7.30pm.
 Thinking about moving most of shifts to early hours, reducing need for split shifts.
have won a new contract, and staff are wanting extra hours, they are all good workers.

Staff would probably be working 1.30am- 9am

What would you say is a fair rate of pay for employees working these hours,
would you pay same rate, or time and a half .

Anything I do during those hours is double pay,...

hi there

if this is a ful time position then you can set the rate, ideally day rate wth an uplift, but ideally not upto time and a half, ie normal rate £6.50 ph time and a half = £9.75 you  should be able to set a rate of say £8.30 ish.

be careful about overloading the good workers with more and more hours, as they may slip a little, it may be worth splitting the teams day and night, and then bring in new staff along side.

Also watch for the additional costs that come from going above the PAYE threshold

if its your decision to work these hours not what the client has stipulated you dont want to pay extra out of your own pocketput it to your staff first that the shifts are avaliable dont mention any extra as it may suit some people if you have no takers try a daiuly shift bous for attendance etc or time / quarter only if the turn up all week or the bonus is lost
ive found the missing in action rate is higher on night s or unsociable hours works

We have many split shifts 4:30 to 9:30am - 6 - 10:30 and pay £6.25 - 7.00.

Its hard fitting it in isn't it. The best way forward is to employ more staff. Dont give extra money. Its costs more and as said, the more work you give workers therer is a chance they will start slipping.

The benifit of more staff as well is the possibility of cover, so if a member goes ill your extra staff may cover for them.

We have good workers as well, we give them extra hours if they want it and tell them "No slipping in standards" plus we dont pay extra as we give extra hours to them its their choice to work longer hours.

There are plenty of people who want the work.

i pay our night staff £8 an hour,£7 an hour basic plus £1 an hour as an attendance and performance bonus this way if they miss work without a good excuse they loose their attendance bonus for the week which amounts to £40 any overtinme done on weekends they get £10 an hour.
