could it be coming from anywhere or are they prone to a certain place, trying to find the leak now but can't seem to find the source.

found the source, its the main gasket at the back of the engine. thanks for the calls guys.

yeah spoke to martin, looks like a trip to cornwall is on the cards. i hate that drive.

might try and nick the bolts up first to see if that cures it, long shot but then its a long drive. :)

Derek

Could you not do it yourself?

1. Drain oil from engine
2. Unbolt engine from mounting and move it back to allow access
3. Unbolt crankcase cover, undoing bolts in opposite sequence.
4. Remove old gasket and fit new one
5. Whilst there fit a new crankcase bearing (housed in the crankcase cover) for the crankshaft
6. Put crankcase cover back on and do up bolts in opposite sequence to retain flatness when tightening (supposed to be at a certain Nm but generally quite tight to very tight is perfect.
7. Move engine back in to place and bolt to floor again.
8. Put oil in (hey, may aswell change filter too).
9. Be safe in the knowledge that you have saved a whole day, and a load of wonga ;D

Mark

p.s. failing that why not ask Dave Ingram?

Too far for Derek Shaun, albeit closer than HM. Dave would be first port of call, if not then DIY, then Oxford and lastly HM.

I think Derek would actually lose 2 days what with staying over in cornwall.

I agree Dave is would be first choice but I'm not sure how he is for time and also spares, he's fixed more  TM's than you can shake a stick at but he is a busy man.

Had this prob with my 4.0 with 22 hp engine. this is a complete engine removal job. couplings of and remove crankcase cover completely. the casket will be hard and in places stuck like rocking hourse £"!! you need to spend time to remove this completely and cleanly. fit new gasket in place and use some kind of high temp silicon gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. This will not only strengthen the joint but also allow the gasket to be held in the correct position while replacing the crankcase.

There is a sharp bend on one side of the crankcase where this seal blows and it does not seem to fit there properly either so in my opinion the sealer is essential.

You must make sure the timing marks are aligned correctly inside too.

You will NOT be able to do this correctly without completely removing the engine. change the oil filter and replace oil etc and refit engine.

If you are not mechanically minded and don't have a good selection of tools i would go to HM!

Cheers Goron

If I ran a tm I would replace it every 2 years .

Even going to Cornwall and back in a day will make the following day gruelling , will cost 150 plus to get there and back , plus repair cost , plus a days lost earnings at least .  Surely the total cost is the thick end of a grand   by the time it is sorted.
I cannot see how it can be viable having that kind of liability hanging over ones head.

Gorons right, but the timimg marks would only need checking if the camshaft pops out, or moves when removing the cover. Very straightforward though.

Good luck Derek, let us know how it goes.

Derek,

Take it to Chemspec in Bailden, West Yorkshire. An engine is an engine regardless of who made the unit, they'll do a good job for you.

Cheers
Pete

Now I like Chemspec alot but I wouldn't mess around I'd go straight to Cornwall, it'll be done and dusted and you can get back to work and it'll feel like brand new again.
