Why not get a di canister and fill it with softening salt ?
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

This is my view having a water softer!

It wont bring down the TDS! your have to get a plumber to fit it! which cost! and the running cost! time spent running around getting salt! and the purchase of the softer as well! yes it does prolong the life of the membranes but the overall cost in the long run is much the same!

Hiya poleman dude ;)
I was thinking the same man.......the price of the unit, plumbing it in,money on salts.....
Probaly might even be more expensive than changeing 40/40 membrain ..........

Thank you for your input man......could be saving me a lot ov time & money ;)

Take care mate & kind regards
Justin ;)

If you want a softener and have a spare DI Vessel, then why not just buy a bag of softener resin?

>>>You can Buy softener resin and granular salt from here<<<

Small bag softener resin = £12
5KG Salt = £3.99

>>Or cheaper softener resin from here<<

All you do is run water through softener just before RO like this..

Pre Filters >> Softener >> RO >>

This enables the RO to work more efficiently and prolongs membrane.

To Regenerate the Softener Resin
Once a week (depending on how much water you produce) fill a 10" filter housing with salt (approx 1KG), and run this through softener only until all salt is dissolved and rinsed through. (takes about 20 minutes).

You can use dishwasher salt granules (supermarket, Lidl, cleaning spot etc etc very cheap) but not table salt..

It goes like this:

Water in >> 10" housing with salt >>  through softener di vessel >> Waste to drain

Hiya poleman... ;)
Thank you for that dude....made it much clearer now man ;D
Ya right Blue Frog Systems ,that is the softner i will use,but i have a spare di bottle plus 2 blue 10' houseings(might be better buying clear housing)??......LOL.......... ;D
Thank you man.......

Clearly poles & heard of a guy that he just runs salt through his resin softner beads & it regenerates them & hes never bought new softner crystals for 4 years now.... :oLOL
I didnt think this would be the same setup.....i'm over the moon now...
Thank you for taking the time out & making it easy to understand how the system works Clearly Poles  ;)
Just 1 question tho guy's...how much water softner crystals will i need to fill a 11.5 ltr di  vessel??
Well 2 questions actuly...LOL....sorry...wot type crystals,also...... :-[
Take care guy's......ya helped me out no end...saved me few hundred quid.... ;)

Big up you fella's ;)

Take care & kind regards
Justin

Hi M8, no worries..

In the first part of my post above there are links to sites to where you can buy softener resin  ::)

Here they are again:

Cleaning Spot (Scroll down) www.cleaningspot.co.uk

Or cheaper softener resin from here: www.daqua.co.uk[/u]

--- Scroll right to the bottom of the page to where it says 'softener resin'

To fill 11.5 litre bottle, you need just under that amount, say, 10 litres.

As I said, you need to run dishwasher salt through the softener resin weekly to regenerate it.

you can buy this in large quantities from cleaning spot, for example, or in 1 - 2 kg bags or boxes from supermarkets.

***Remember that only softener resin can be regenerated with salt, not normal DI resin!**

Hiya Clearly Poles mate.... ;)
Big"THANK YOU" fella.....
I'v been into reach & wash years now & used a merin with 500+ ppm tap water & sounds like i'v suffered man..LOL!
My output from merlin was 40-50ppm ish...thats a load of resin to polish that to 000ppm dude :o
I'v invested in a 40/40 HF5 low pressure system, dont even need booster,& it will be nice to soften the water for the first time ever ;D
My new 40/40 Clearly Poles  produces 12-13ppm from 500+....WOW!!!!!
I Wanna look after it man ;)& keep them membrains from scaling up with lime etc....
Thank you for your help mate, helped me out no end ;)
Thank you so much
Take care & Kind regards
Justin ;)

Also do i just fill a empty 10' cartridge up with salt to flush,or do i need some kind ov filter in houseing???
Thanks again man.....ya sound dude ;)
I'm bookmarking this thread man..... ;)
Sorry to terrorise you dude...its just never thought about this until now ::)

The only reason I bought an automatic water softener was because with one it's impossible to send salt through your RO membrane if you forget to change the waste hoses over like I did and wrecked my first membrane.
Mines in my garage next to my static and I also plumbed my washing machine to it which my Mrs likes for nice soft clothes!
If you've built your own system, you should be able to do a simple bit of plumbing.

Pre-filters THEN softener?  I have mine before the pre-filters.

I shall swap it round then!

Keep testing the waste water TDS from softener vessel, when it reads the same as the water going in, all the salt has passed through and done it's job..

Also do i just fill a empty 10' cartridge up with salt to flush,or do i need some kind ov filter in houseing???

Yes, just fill but don't overfill it..

You don't need any filters,  but you'll need to run water through the 10" cannister backwards so that water coming into it jets straight down the middle of the cannister  and dissolves salt more quickly...

ie: use 'water in' as outlet, and the 'out' as water in (if that makes sense)

Pre-filters THEN softener?  I have mine before the pre-filters.

I shall swap it round then!

I'm actually having second thoughts as to whether pre-filters should be first or not...?  ???
You might want to get a second opinion on that one, as I'm pretty sure Ionic set theirs up softener>>pre filters>>> RO   :-[
As I say, double check this point first..

Hiya guy's....hope ya okay ;)
Got my softner beads today........ ;D
Anyway guy's,i'v never used these before :-[
So iv put my softner beads into my old di bottle & ran water through it....& guess what the first bit of water coming from vessel rose from 525(tap water) to 900ppm..EH!!! :o :o :o
i have left running for 5 minutes & it has dropped to 600ppm......
My tap water is only 525 @ the minute & coming from softner vessel is 600ppm.....
Is this normal guy's???
I dont expect the softner to drop ppm,as i'v bought it to protect the membrains a lil bit,as you can see i live in a hard water area, but on the other hand i didnt expect it to rise the ppm????
Is this right fella's ???
Or does it just need a good flush with tap water???
Couldnt belive it guy's...
Any help much appreciated lad's
Kindest regards
Justin ;)
