Basic filter to block the specks in pure water

I process to a couple of water butts in a yard, and inevitably the odd speck of dirt or a fly can get in - there's always floaters on the top but I just pump it all in to the van tank
Though there is a filter on the van pump, I would prefer not to have to keep cleaning that and disturbing the connection
Does anyone use a very basic filter to prevent most of the bits getting passed along the system, or am I the only peasant that lets em in to begin with

Put a piece of tights or fishing net over the hose which pumps the water out of the water butt.

William, would that work for fast flow pumping - I had been thinking about putting a sieve over the tank filler hole, but that would be ideal cos it could just be left on the pipe end.

Thanks Gaz - it would be too small for my 32mm transfer pipe but could maybe go on the hose outlet of the van mount tank - that would help any stuff left in the van tank, though I would still like to put something on the transfer pipe - like the nyon William mentioned

If you need it for a fast filling transfer pump, what I did was get a ball which grebils and rats play with, it already has holes in it and has a small ball on the inside, this acts as a weight and helps to kept the hose at the bottom of the barrel, though one of the holes ( you might need to enlarge the hole if your using 32mm hose) put the hose in then wrap a piece of tights around secure and with a plastic tie.

I have a filter that connects to the pump so there is no chance of anything getting through the filter. I dont know how I would clean this out but when I filter water I make sure there are no gaps in the container where dirt gets in.
