They can advise.  They have no power to prevent you from going about your lawful business, even in a "no cold calling" area.

You can help yourself by being "high profile" - I always wear my uniform, green logo'd cap, green logo'd shirt with green tie, green uniform trousers and if it's cold a green logo'd jacket.  I leaflet first and have my logo on the leaflets along with a photo of me in my uniform.

There's absolutely no doubt who I am when I knock on a door ;D

sorry mate but you are wrong. Ask any big canvassing company. I have worked for loads in my time. Without id police have the right to stop you. It has happened to me 3 times when working for the milk  dairys canvassing as its a way that burgerlars operate to find there bait houses to rob. ?now i always
have my id or at least my driving liscence on me so they can check who i am

Sorry to you too ;)

I didn't mean to suggest they can't stop you and question you, of course they can but if you can give a good reason for what you're doing and prove who you are then they can't stop you.

There is no law saying knocking on doors is illegal.

Are you sure?  I have canvassed later than 8pm in the summer months, I was under the impression it was 9pm.
