RO. Fastest? Cheapest?
« on: May 29, 2010, 12:42:02 pm »
I run a static merlin RO. My tds is 50 - 60 at the tap. 0 - 1 after the RO.

It produces enough water (just) to run 4 vehicles if it is on permanently.

I know i could probably get away with using just the RO water but, I have 2 DI bottles in series on the van. This helps as we can fill up at houses if needs be.

We are currently building another wfp system with the intent of starting round 5.

This will probably mean a shortage of water from the RO.

How many of you use a 4040? There seem to be many of these, so which one is best and where did you get it? Does it have waste like the merlin?

Are there any others and how much do they produce/waste?

Any help appreciated.

are you using triggers on the poles? - they will roughly half your water usage.

what is your tap pressure? - if below 50psi get a booster pump.

If all else fails then the HF5 4040 membrane is probably your best choice, with housing and prefilters you would be looking at around £600

gapswater.co.uk ask for june,

4040 pumped you will be amazed how much water it can make, I produce 2000l over night un pumped 4040, if your running yours all day 24 hours a day your asking to cost yourself money should it slow down.

depending on what you want to spead there are system for about 3.5K that do everything for you. auto flush | make |stop .

Hi, first post  ;D
from my limited knowledge/experience i'm impressed with the quality of water claimed to be produced by the Merlin RO system. The time factor seems to be a big downside.
I have a friend in North Wales with a water pressure of 100 psi plus and a tds similar to your approx 60ppm, his twin RO system from Facelift systems fills his 650 litre tank from empty in roughly 2 hours. A tds reading of the tank shows 0ppm, he hasn't had to renew any of the two DI resin cannisters on his two man system in a year. His tank out put runs through the DI as required by the pumps. I have no idea exactly what membranes he has in it, Facelift systems could probably tell you.
Myself i got a HF5 40/40 kit from Gaps water for approx £600, (single RO) i have a water pressure of approx 40 PSI and a tds reading of 130 ppm, my product water was coming out at  30 ppm and taking me 3 hours to fill 320 litres(half a tank). I bought a booster pump from ebay(£120 with postage) with a built in pressure tank and i fill from a header tank at 80 psi and i have not improved my TDS, my fill time now for an empty 650 litre tank is approx just over 2 hours but my TDS has not come down.
The best priced 40/40 membranes i have seen now is, suprisingly from Ionics who do the HF5 low pressure membrane and (champ)housing for £300 i havn't seen it cheaper.
Hope that helps you !  :)

edit to add, if you're concerned about waste water you would be best to go the twin RO system route.

if your tds has not come down after booster pump something is wrong:

have you checked the flush valve is not causing this problem, is the membrane shot ? when do you change your pre filters and when you do how long do you flush it for, How often do you backwash your system ?

I flush it for approx 15 mins each time i use it, usually before i use it. Its all new, just over a month old. I have a idea somethings wrong and have spoken to gaps water about it. Its been on flush from tap 40 psi today for 4 hours and then a few hours from booster at 80 psi, still no change. They seemingly can't offer any advice other than my booster may not be appropriate, although i'm certain that it is as its constant and with a high capacity flow.

tbh with you when I first got a 4040 my tds out was very high for weeks then it started dropping.

My tds is 470+ and get reading from 9/13 think lowest was 7 with a booster pump

have you kept details of the reading out ?

quick question do you have a link to your booster pump ?

the reason I ask is if your booster pump looks like or is same size as surflow pumps tds can goup if using one, I tried it when I bought a merlin..

there is a reason for this high tds and I will try and help fix it with you, others will when they pick up the thread i'm sure.

Ok thanks, here is the pump

Ebay

I run this pump so its emptying a 500 litre storage tank as it pushes water out faster than my tap can supply it. TDS in the tank is same as from my tap , 130 ppm. I have the pressure gagues on my prefilters and both show constant 80 psi.

what tds meter are you using and how old is it ? I know it is a basic question but one that could be a problem

I have two HM Digitals, they're both about 8 weeks old. I bought all the kit end of March/beginning of April and started using it beginning of May.

That is how we used to do it.

It cost us around 200 - 300 per month in resin.

I have tried taps and triggers to no avail. They never last more than a day.

My pressure is 50 psi, I keep a gauge on it after the pre filters so I know when they need changed.

We are now using a better quality resin so it may still be a viable option, not been using it long but it certainly appears to last much longer.

my resin lasts around 6 months di only but if i x that by 4 it still only be a sack every month or so at say £80 a month, my tds is around 45. are you buying from daqua now it is good stuff
