its a heath and safety card
its to prove you have passed a certain level and are competant
get various trades or levels
you will find you may only have to show if working on construction sites
most of the big players will require you to show it

Most building companies will require you have this card.
They will be obliged to deduct 20% from your 'ex vat' total and pay it over to the government.
They need your CSCS details to do so.
There are big fines for companies that don't do this now so if you want to do work for these companies then you will definitely need one, if you do not want to work for them then no worries.

By the way, keep very close tabs on what is deducted from you and guard the certificates sent to you stating the amounts deducted with your life, without them you will not get this back at the end of the tax year.  Also, don't hold your breath waiting for the cheque to arrive!

My apologies, you are spot on (it's late and I'm tired) I got the two confused, sorry. :P :P

You will still find that you will not be able to work for the 'big goys' without the CSCS card as they are required by their H&S gurus to ask any subbies for the relevant cards.  If you don;t have it, then you don't work on their sites.

The H&S test is only one part of the qualification for the card.

I'm off to bed now before I fall asleep on the keyboard!

I've just got back from Banbury, this afternoon, working on an extension to an existing store.

Over the last 3.5 years I have cleaned about 50 stores and initially I could get on a site without the card.

On every site now I have to present my CSCS card and IPAF license. They will not let me operate on site without it!!.

Even though I have shown it loads of times and I deal with the same people I still have to show it and do an induction video, every time. It wouldn't be so bad if the video was sometimes a bit different but I know it word for word.

Is the CSCS card worth it?. Best money I ever spent!!

It doesn't stop you from being dangerous but if you are working, as it has been put - ' for the big boys'  then you should know better without being told!!!

Rob ;D
