I was just wondering how many of you either use a business account or just your personal one. My reason for asking is the amount of silly charges my business bank charges etc.

I use a business account as I run a business, I use my personal account for personal stuff

i use two personal account one is for work use only the other is family use, i keep meaning to look into a business account but never seem to get around to it,

I used to just use a personal account for work, but they soon stopped it when the amount of cheques increased.

I now have one for business and one for personal.
It means I dont have to ask people to make a cheque out to my name anymore ... its a must do when dealing with commercial clients.

i think some banks are offering free business banking now. Im with the abbey i think they do it so might look into it.

I didnt like the fact that you have to pay your cheques in the post office, and they just post them to AandL.

The staff frown when i take in loads of cheques  but they're a nicd bunch at my branch .

I've only got choice of barclays, natwest or hsbc !

I used to use nationwide personal account fir 5 years until they realised i used it for bbusiness because of the number of cheques i pay in, im now with santander business account and the first 100 cheques a month are free, and there are no other frees either.

I started off with just my personal one, then used HSBC free business banking for 18 months. Then switched to Bank of Scotland for another 12 months free. So from reading your comments I'm just going to what Smiffy does have two personal accounts.

No it's not. 

And by the time a commercial company finds out that you just use a private account, it's too late, you've cleaned their windows and invoiced them.  The 'poshest' account I've had was the Hilton Hotel Newport, and they never batted an eye-lid.  Neither do any of my current commercial accounts; and not only that, the guy/gal who contracted you will usually be different from the person who writes out the cheque, so from the point of view of 'appearing professional', a business account is wasted there too.

I've never had a problem using a personal account.

When working for large firms most will assume you are trading under your business name and send a cheque to your business name.
The only way around this it by putting .. please make chque payable to "J. Bloggs"
I dont think it gives the right impression if you are trying to win larger jobs.

all banks by law have to report you to the inland revenue if your account develops more than 3k in deposits.

business banking is not that expensive and it does look more professional.

if your bank suspects you of using your personal for business they will send you a letter informing you of back dated charges. (small print) and you will be really stung.

Richy, your trying to do the right thing, so keep doing it m8, and at the same time tosh is an old hand it works for him, nither is right or wrong.


I think a business by law should use a business account as that is what they are for and personal account are for personal. but thats for another post.

in Lloyds they used to hide when they saw me lol, they now have a clever machine that does it all just add the bundle of cheques in and it feeds them into my business account  I normally go next door to backery and buy the gilrs some sins
