Dropbox.
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:47:02 pm »
Someone on here a while back mentioned using Dropbox to back up George/WCP. I've downloaded it and tried to view George (via Dropbox) on another pc but the program isn't recognised and I can't see how to get it working. Any tips for success?

Thanks,

Tom

Create a new folder within the dropbox folder on your pc, (usually in "my documents").
Then when you backup on George/wcp, browse for that folder to send the backup to.
It will automatically backup to dropbox's server as soon as any changes are made within the folder on your pc so you don’t need to worry about that. (Providing you have an internet connection)
You will then be able to access the folder you created (which is now duplicated on the server) from any pc.
So in the event of a disaster you just need to download a fresh copy of the program, install the backup and you’re up and working again.
I back mine up every time it shuts down, Takes 2 seconds as George automatically sends to the last used destination.

In order to read the 'George' file correctly on another PC you will need to have George software on that PC otherwise it will just show a load of gobbledegook in a textfile.

same for wcp, it gives a database file that cannot be read unless the software is installed

Dropbox simply acts as a folder on your PC but you can view it from any web enabled device.  As long as the backup is done correctly to the dropbox folder, you should be able to run data restore as normal on the new PC.

Not sure, but maybe the demo version doesn't let you restore files from a full version... dunno!

I have just run a data restore direct from dropbox and it is working fine.  Not sure why it isn't for you, but it won't be dropbox that is to blame as it is simply an online folder and nothing else.

Sorry if this isn't much help, just relaying my experiences.
