i have a 250 lte upright but thinking i shoulkd have got 350 or 400 ltr
would a flat tank be ok to put poles etc on top reel etc?

That's what I do.
400 flat with a layer of plywood, then everything else on top

I would say go for upright, I tried layflats and is like going on a ferry trip in rough seas.

But im sure someone else will say opposite

i have a 500 ltr flat tank , and yes depending on which way you run baffles , you either get side to side motion , or back and forth, i mounted mine with baffles length ways for better cornering .
 had to take my van into garage a while ago ,  to have pump fixed , he phoned me later to say he was having problems, had fixed pump , but van was not pulling properly.
forgot to tell him there was a 3/4 tank full of water in the back, the back and forth of the water, can sometimes make van feel as if it's not  pulling properley, i am used to it, the garage owner was not amused

Personally the reason I'm buying an upright tank is for floor space.
I've only got a Berlingo so need to make the most of the space.
The thing with lay flat tanks is unless you board over the top you find yourself puting things on top and that just drove me nuts.

as for the swashing around I did find that with the lay flat tanks but like I say I've only got a Berlingo with a Doblo you maybe able to have the tank a different way round so it's not as bad.

I find the thing with flat tanks is there is still a lot of water in the tank when you cant draw any more, probably about 50 litres. so if your thinking between 350 and 400 flat , then definately go for the 400. I do same with 400 and plywood over top. Works fine. I find myself leaving my cutomers on inclines till last and parking the van uphill so the water rolls to the outlet.
