A lesson learned
« on: July 11, 2005, 11:38:36 pm »
I suppose enough has been said, but...I found this site a week ago.  I do think it's great, and most of you guys come across genuine and helpful, but...
I asked a bit of advice on WFP systems being ignorant of them, I got one helpful link, and some good chat, no problem, no complaints Really.
But if I'd put my name as Becki or Sandra would I have got more notice?
Never mind, keep it up guys this is a great forum, very helpful.

Yep, try some underhanded shameless plug and you'll never get so many replies! ;D

Part of it is due to the way posts are presented - if you look at other newbies' you'll see there is often a big and helpful response, esp when there seems to be a "help I don't have a clue" approach. So it could be Janet or John, it doesn't matter.

Did your posts present as 'the cleaner service', 'full time member' with 3 stars. That alone suggests you are not new to the industry - how did you get to full membership in a week by the way. I was still dreaming of such dizzy heights after a couple of months:D

No Davindo
I didn't say I was new to the industry, just this forum.  If you look back you'll see I have only been here a week or so and on my first posting I stated that I have been cleaning windows for 18 years, but thought I'd join this to exchange ideas.  I'm getting older, but not too old to learn, and pleased to share anything useful I may have learned, with genuine enquirers.
How I became a full member with 3 stars?? I have no idea, ask the guys who control the forum, they put that there.  I don't even know who they are.  I just liked the look of most of the things I've read in here and decided to join in, I thought most of these guys are genuine!!
Thought I'd add a comment on LESSON LEARNED because things are not always as they seem.  On these type of sites it is too easy to be deceptive.  People are not always who they say they are.
I am who I say I am, You only have my word on this, I don't mind a bit of humour, but I assure you if people get suspicious of me on here, I'm off.  Likewise if I get too suspicious of too many others then there is no point to it.
No problem with you questioning me as long as you accept my reply.
Respect must be earned, you can't demand it.
I feel better now

Steve - how right you are - I feel complete now :)

Pj - I totally understand your points - the membership question was just curiosity - the main reason I wrote was it seemed a shame that someone decent was coming on to the forum just at the time that a couple of jokers were getting all the attention whilst they tried to peddle their wares in an immature and unworthy fashion.
A lot of us, who may have sussed them already, still get sucked into the debate because it's so annoying.
That tends to take attention away from 'proper' postings.

So, a genuine welcome, and long may you stay :)

PJ.
Welcome to the forum.

I've only been going for about 3 months as a newbie!! but i think you will find most of the members really helpful as they are to everybody.

The tips & help they have given me (& all new newbies) you would'nt find in any other industry, as you said we can all learn something no matter how long in the trade.

As somebody said you did'nt appear to be new to the Forum with your stars!! so now everything is sorted i'm sure you will get the response you deserve.

Regards Ray.(male)

... and if you don't it might be because the questions have been asked many times and answered but no one seems prepared to look thru the old posts to find the info.

PJ,

I don't think it's a case that a 'female' receives more attention than the males when it comes to having their post answered.

I think it's more of a different kind of post to answer, that receives the attention.

Also the manner in which the question is couched really matters.  An open ended question such as 'So what's this WFP all about?' probably wouldn't receive much of a reply as it's such a big question.  Whereas a similar questions such as 'Could I earn more money using a WFP?' would probably open a can of worms.

However, traditional window cleaning methods always appear popular too.  The often asked, but always answered, 'What's the best liquid for window cleaning' gets a good response without fail.  I remember recently an experienced window cleaner 'knocked' Unger Gel because he couldn't get it to disolve in his bucket.  Somone - with great glee - pointed out that it should be used directly onto his applicator. Doh!

And as Davidabishop points out, many people join the forum and ask questions that get asked repeatedly, which I don't think is a bad thing.  It helps the member posing the question to clarify the problem in his own mind first.  It may not receive much of a response though; but does that really matter?  It's not a popularity contest.

There are also many posters who, for what-ever reason, don't start threads; but contribute to them.  There's nothing wrong with this either.

On the whole, they're a genuine lot here.  I've been a member for over two years and I only know of three (including Becki - aka Carl) incidents where members have been real 'prats'.

What else can I say, PJ, apart from welcome to the forum, mate.

Don't worry mate, we all get ignored sometimes!
Just depends who's online at the time.
Everybody gets help in the end.

Tosh, you've just made post 666. :o

Quick, write something else before someone accuses you of being the "Devil Mod"! ;)
