Yes, the pointer is a real one, no they aren't cobbled together, years back I had a couple of extending pointers, useful tools, the ones I had were 8ft cos I found it easier to remover the pointer half of the ladder and use as a standard pointer ladder.
The bigger ones I found no good as when you took out the pointer it was too big to use by itself.
Usefull on large windows on commercial work and on the kind of stuff where it is difficult to use a pole (as against big plate glass where the use of a pole is a doddle).
I didn't read the details, but if it was a fairly newish double pointer then the current bid is a snip!
When you have them well extended they can feel a bit unstable though.
I have no idea if they will still comply with new guidelines on safe ladder use though
