My new way of working
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:23:09 am »
This weather has been a real wake up call for me....and looking at the weather chaps info about global warming i.e hotter warmers summers and colder winters...

I have just run the numbers for my business and I believe that with a little extra effort this year I could run from mid Feb to Mid December and still make a reasonable living for all 52 weeks of the year and still have money by for the sweeter things in life.

This has just me me re-think the whole year round service thing. Perhaps just 1 big holiday off per might be the way to go.

I think I will try it this year and see what happens....not that it looks like I have much choice...

Have you been re-thinking you business?

Cheers
Dave.

Jan and Feb are always really bad here, but it's sod's law mate. Had a couple of Febuary golden months before. About 3 years ago, was able to work the whole of Feb. If custies get the idea you don't do winters, they could think you are part time or whatever. Image goes down the pan.

Fair point..perhaps I should just plan for work between mid Feb and mid Dec..then everyones happy...with a little juggling I honestly believe this is totally workable for me...hows the carpet biz doing?

Cheers
Dave.

The weather chaps info about global warming Pingu? Hot summers cold winters? Give over.

If its a hot summer they say 'global scamming means hotter summers - best get used to droughts'.

If its a cool wet summer 'global warming means more clouds from evaporation so cooler wetter summers'.

Warm winter 'see told you, its global warming, snow will soon be a distant memory in this country'.

Cold winter 'ah you see, the global warming means weather patterns have shifted and we're getting someone else's weather, better get used to cold winters and a new ice age'.

Muppets fodder for muppets. Oh and you need to pay some carbon tax to prevent any or all of the above happening - even though we don't know which it will be.

Have always based our targeted turnover on 46 weeks per year, to allow for hols sick weather etc.  :) Customers do realise that you need time off!

Phil...I live here on the in-continent and in the 5 winters I have been here each year we have had weather that prevents working and especially freezing conditions.

So like you I need to work and personally I do believe that the world weather patterns are changing and changing enough for me to re-think my way of working so I am not stuck at home as I am now. In the past 3 weeks I have earnt the grand total of 527 euro's..19%VAT and 23% income tax that and see whats left without all the other expenses that a individual and business needs to operate.

So being a bit of a muppet ;) I do believe that I need to review my working practices so these winters do not have a negative impact on my family.

Perhaps you are in a very different position to me...I hope so but in the mean time I'll look at those things that affect my ability to work, live and make money and make changes early enough to limit there impact.

Cheers
Dave.

I wish they would give the kids 4 weeks off at Christmas, and 4 in the summer.
I could then sod off to Indonesia every Christmas, It's hardly worth going all that way for less than 3 weeks though.

Thats it...have been reworking the round and where work can be increased and made to work smoother....it will be

44 weeks is now my new working year...this will be Mon 15/02/10 to Friday 17/12/10...so when or if we have bad snow next winter I do not care as I'll be able to stay at home and do what I do best..nothing...

In the event I can work extra days in between..so be it...but I'll' be on holiday for the 1st three weeks of Feb next year in Playa Blanca...not glamorous but not here either.

Perhaps this weather is just the push I need.

Cheers
Dave.
