I have a 99 vw caddy van and have a 350 ltr tank in it, tbh i thought that it would be alot for her to carry around but she goes alright at that, that said ive yet to drive her with a full tank of fuel at the same time
Take a look at my kit on the 'pics of our babys' thread and see

That payload is from dry weight. So your fuel, fluids, you and passenger, lining, and everything else is taken from it. Personally I'd say 300ltr is the max for an escort 55. Obviously a little bit more in the 75.

you friend will be over the limit if full tank with one person.
You also need to take into account of the fuel weight, all the equipment (poles, hose, reels), roof racks, etc.
However your very unlikely to ever get pulled regarding your weight.. its just a case of H&S of others on the road and pedestrians.
so its really up to you.

As above, you'll be unlucky to get pulled doing local work, BUT on the motorway there are a lot of traffic cops looking for vans to pull and take to the weighbridge. I've drove a van for years up and down the UK, and been taken to weighbridges loads of times. Usually they'll say you can lose some weight and return within the hour to be weighed again and if your under you'll be ok. Sometimes they fine you on the spot - 3 points and up to £1000 fine. If you're really over it's nicked for dangerous load/driving or similar. Either way you won't be able to move the vehicle till you've unloaded weight - easy for us lot though - just empty the tank..

I had an Escort van for 3 weeks and it wallowed like a boat with 400L in it.
My payload now is 1250kg and I carry about 500 at the most I guess.
Barely notice when it's full or empty.
