depends on colour and more importantly pile content. If wool in cream/white could be problem but if manmade, and hopefully polyproplene, should come out no problem

If you have access to an ozone generator, you could use this, it will remove it and kill any odour far beyond what any of the other applications mentioned will do.

Never use Ozone on damp carpets or fabrics as it will bleach.

Wow thats a sweeping statement,

I better go back and get all those property's and buildings we have used it in to see if they are all bleached  ;D

If over exposed it could cause some bleaching but you would have to leave it running for a good few days to do that and there would never be the need.
If used properly ozone is far and away the best way to kill mildew and mould spores and is safer than using sprays and detergents, its leaves no residue only oxygen.

Ozone mixed with water creates concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide. Plenty of fire and flood restoration contractors have fallen foul of this fact over the years, including ourselves. We were ozoning a house after a protein fire and was unaware that one of the technicians had tried to remove a stain from the landing carpet just using a wet cloth. Next morning 2 small bleach stains on the carpet. Luckily we were able to re-tuft them rather than having to replace the whole carpet. Another contactor put a suite in his Ozone chamber unaware that the beading around the cushions was still damp, turned pink and was un-reversable.
I have used Ozone machines for 15 years and sell them so I do know how good they are but would never use one in a situation where there were wet carpets. As you say it will kill mould and spores however it is the chemical constituents of mould spore which damge your health. These are still present even when the mould has been killed. You still need to physically remove it.

We do fire and flood restoration and have never had a problem, if the humidity is right ,

Your describing oxygenation, or oxygen water. This happens when the air is heavy with damp and you introduce oxygen (ozone). If you control the damp with
dehumidifiers you should not have a problem. You can further enhance the process by keeping it dark, do not allow any ultra-violet light in.

I suspect that where the spot clean had taken place and the carpet was damp, UV light was coming in directly through a window, with regards to your friends sofa, that just sounds like colour bleed to me from the beading which can occur in the cleaning process or if wet by some other means.

Having said that, we have used Ozone with out dehums with great success

We did a famous theatrical and stage school where hundreds of costumes not to mention carpets and drapes were affected by damp. with the use of ozone we prevented any further mould damage to the costumes, this saved them untold thousands of pounds.

The physical removal as you put it is carried out in the cleaning afterwards.

In 2002 Tottenham Hotspur (spit  ;D) had a major damp problem in one of their bars, the Captains bar in fact, and a very large bar restaurant next door, the carpet with is navy blue with the crest in it, had a film of mildew right across it, it looked quite impressive, we installed ozone machines killed the mildew and cleaned and sanitised the carpets, in time for their AGM which was taking place the following the week.

The bleaching occured overnight as the Ozone machine was switched on when we left the site. The discolouration to the suite was done by an ex chairman of the NCCA so I would have thought he would be able to tell if it was colour bleed, or maybe not.
Just something I am wary of now.
Have you used any of the new hydrogen peroxide machines?

Hi John

Are you refering to the HPV machine ?

If so I have not used one personally but I have seen one in action in a hospital ward, the time they save is amazing and removes the need for the so called 'deep cleaning' process.

If you have tried one after a flood contamination I would be interested to know what the outcome was, they are proven to destroy all bacteria and virusus so would be ideal in this situation.
