« on: September 29, 2003, 12:52:32 am »
One of my regulars had new windows a couple of months ago , the ones with brown frames,  she has asked me if I can clean the frames next time I clean the windows. I agreed and told her that I will try to remember to bring some PVC cleaner with me next time , she told me that she wanted me to use wd 40 as the window fitters had recomended this to her ,has  anyone used this, and will it work 8)

Hi majestic
never heard of that one before.
Would keep well away from the windows, would of thought it'll make a right mess trying to clean them with the oily film?
If new offer a routine clean of every 3 months, with your normal washing water will keep the dirt off.

Ps I might be wrong?

on this note, keep WD40 away from the hinges etc, they really clog them up after time, best to use a silacone spray

(only know this as i have fitted alot of them)

WD-40 doesn't have any silicones in it at all. thats why people use it on clothes when they are ironing, cause it is quite a non abrasive oil/cleaner. i was recently thinking of using it on a nitrocellulose laquer finish (somthing totally not to do with window cleaning). WD-40 won't damage practically any finish. by the way, nitrocellulose is one of the most soft and brittle laquer finishes around, and isn't even used anymore cause it yellows and checks with age

Ive heard (but haven used yet) that the best thing to use is Cif liquid for frames - this was by window fitters as well.  Anyone used it before or know if its any good

I've used it for removing adhesive. I always carry one in the van. Cheaper than oil-flo.

Some one on this forum said he used wd 40 in Brown gutters to put back lustre it should not harm wood finish frames but I would not put it on to thick. As it could catch dust. I find a dash board cleaner has always worked for me on white frames if they seem dull and I also use car wax on alu frames if they have that white milky residual that come off in the clean.

You are right, it doesn't contain any silicone but it does contain petroleum distillates which in time will discolour white pvc and take the shine out of ANY coloured pvc.

As for ironing with it, it's FLAMMABLE :o

Oh by the way, I used to be a window fitter for 10yrs

I NEVER use WD40 on the frames, I use it on the guttering.
if you use WD40 on the frames you will wash it onto the windows.

All it does it makes the frame look shiny because its oily. You can use Armour All from Halfords to do a better job than that. Its used for shining up car trim inside and out.

the reality is theres no time for that on a busy round , as long as i clean the frames well with a wet rag with CIF  on it the first clean, from then on  a 2 second rubover with the scrim is all thats needed to maintain the gloss

also id say be careful of using anything thats not a regular cleaning fluid, as it might come back n bite you in the bum one day, if a  window frame fades theyd have grounds to sue you .   its a very claim happy world out there now

I never use cif, this scratches the plastic.
it has gritty material within the cream, which gives it the scrubbing ability.
I only use UPVC solvent cleaner.

dont bother with that - just wfp the frames or if trad then a bucket of soapy water and a few micro fibre cloths will do the job, if the frames are brown thats even easier than cleaning white frames so def no need for wd40.

your the bloody window cleaner - you tell her what to use!
