My mate has give me the number of a friend who has a stain on her carpet caused by stuff - presume oil - that has come out of a stepping machine.Obviously been using it on the carpet.Wants me to have a go at cleaning it!!!
Any ideas of what will shift it?Sorry to be a bit vague but thats all I know and cant reach the lady on the phone at the minute for more info

Do a test first with a terry towel and cotton buds to see what will move it.
Start with the weakest product and work your way up the scale.
Depends on what you carry but I would go with a 'friendly' oil remover, then move to solvex, then something like POG then white spirit, but like I said don't just dive in there throwing white spirit about the place when something less hostile might do the job.
My biggest concern here is that it could be the rubber feet leaving marks. No they acn be a real problem and even paint stripper has failed for me on one occassion, but please only use that as a last resort with full customer awareness and permission.

Citrus gel works for me on oil/tar etc, because it's a gel it will sit on 'top' of the stain. Similar products are available fro other suppliers. Be careful when using Solvex/spirits etc. They are liquids so do not apply directly to the carpet as you can can cause damage. I'm sure that's what Neil below meant "use terry towel cotton buds" but to be clear use these as an applicator in small amounts. If there is no transfer (oil mark to towel) don't persist by re-applying again and again it will not improve, move on to something else. Use solvents before water based products, once wet a solvents effectiveness is greatly reduced. Be patient! Get some carpet samples of various fibres from your local carpet shop, stain them up and practice. It will build you confidence.
