can someone run through the workings of ro please? not so much the technical side, more the practical side - like for example. how long to make water, when do i make the water? and so on.

think there is alot of us new to ro that are worried about the practical side and dont wanna spend money on something that may not work for certian needs or space ect.......

hard to get an idiots guide on this because everyone trys to help on the basis you know what they are on about and for a non expert you just get lost after a few secs.

Using two resin bottles will make little or no difference to the amount of resin used.

This is in fact a false statement. If you use 2 vessels in line you get the value of the first vessels depreciation as you use the second as a polisher. If you have 1 vessel you throw away the resin when it gets to 10 however with 2 in line you get the value of the first vessel from 10 to whatever your ppm is. So in effect your tap water is going into the 2nd vessel via some being taken out. I have work it out to be a 60% extra saving.

Having said that if your tap is 300ppm I would not even consider DI only and would RO instead.

how long did a 25ltr bag last you?  how much water a day/week?

then someone can tell you what ro to get!

i only use w.f.p for 1st floor and above! i only get through around 100ltrs a day at the mo because im still building my round! but i want to go full time W.F.P soon!

so how long did a bag last you???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a bag lasts about a month so far but my round is still very small at the moment!

hi ya george.

so a bag lasted a month. how many houses you doing a month on that?

what sort of resin were you using?

where are you based?
prbably around 70 houses a month on one bag of dowex resin

im based in lincolnshire (east mids)

thankyou.

Using two resin bottles will make little or no difference to the amount of resin used.  Resin will remove a set volume of impurities, so it is mathematically possible to calculate how much pure water your resin will make if you know your starting TDS.  Once the resin is depleted it will not remove any more impurities.

As most others have said, the only sensible way to purify if you have more than about 50-60 TDS input is to use an RO
I am very surprised with this comment from you Ian.

I used to use one di vessal I wanted 2 at the start before this was meantioned much on here if at all I was binning resin near on every week, I now have 2 and do this once a month if that. So making little or no difference is not correct. maybe it depends on what grade resin you use, I use Dowex, and it works for me and I have saved hundreds in time and resin having 2 vessels.

go to wilkos and get a 210ltr water butt, less than £20. R.O into that. then to pump it out, a submersible pump from B&Q screwfix ebay etc. £20-40.

good idea i might just do that! thankyou.

I have never used Di only, that was after ro, my tds out of tap is over 470. i had small di vessal and was for ever changing it as soon as they hit 001 I would bin them that is plain stupid, I now bin when they are the same level as the ro output so I get everything out of the resin at 001 the resin still has loads of life left in it.

If you saw the space I started off when wfp you would laugh.

Why can you not have an RO unit ?

I use two and it does save money. Mind you my TDS is only about 57 ppm.
If I used one vessel then I would have to bin the resin as soon as the TDS level got to 5 or 6 ppm.
With two vessels, I can carry on using the one giving out 5 or 6 ppm as the first vessel, as 5 or 6 is a hell of a lot less than my tap water at 57ppm.
When the first vessel reading is the same as my tap water there is nothing more to be gained from it, and I bin that resin, I then continue using a single vessel until it reads 5 or 6  ppm, I then put the newly filled vessel behind it.
I now have 5 or 6 ppm TDS running into the fresh resin again.
With 57 TDS, tap water, I get about 3 months work out of a single 25ltr bag using about 200 to 250 liters a day on average.
