I've got to clean a carpet and an office type chair tomorrow - the carpet has a blood stain about the size of a dinner plate and a quarter of the chair seat has a blood stain on it.

I plan to cold water rinse first then apply Stain Pro, dwell and cold water rinse again - and I have advised the client that a second visit may be required due to wick back.

Anyway, my query is what precautions should I be taking personally - the stain is dry and about a week old.

Any feedback would be appreciated - I've only cleaned up the odd spots before now.

Because it's dry it could become airborne with disturbance, so eye protection, breathing protection and because when you dampen the area and risk splashes, gloves and a full disposable over suit.

The obvious one is get your jabs but its a bit late for that.

The work needs to be done out of hours and I would wear a mask if I were you. Are you using the TM or the porty? If porty you will need to vent your exhaust out of a window. I'm sure I don't need to tell you about airborne pathogens mate.

As an extra precaution I would put down a strong bacteriacide first (cold obviously) as well as at the end.

Thats how I always approach these.

Just to give you a taster of the comedy of errors on my part.

On the job before I had left the envirodri outside for 10mins and it p1ssed it down without my knowing it.

This job had an issue with cat hairs. What happened when I turned the envirodri on? Yep you got it, it tripped the electrics every time. Q the hand brush  : I have'nt worked this hard in the last few years to surround myself with all the right kit to be getting on my hands and knees again. Will fill you in on the rest when I see ya

I swear by Prochem's "stain absorbing powder" except you can't get it any more although I think Chemspec do something similar.

Anyway, reason for suggesting this is that once you have extracted, you put your high absorbing "whatever" on the stain. Any wick-back goes into the "whatever" which is then vacuumed off the following day. Nine times out of 10 you won't need to make a second visit.

Apart from that I would be doing exactly as you and the others suggest.
