Hello.  Out canvassing today and noticed many doors have 'we do not buy or sell' at the door stickers on their front doors.

Would you guys still knock this one or just move on to the next?  I was suprised at how many people have these

We knock regardless of the signs. You will get the odd one in every couple of hundred point to it.

At that point I explain that I'm offering a service, not buying / selling.

I comply with anything like that.  The ones you refer will get a leaflet from me but I won't knock.  Signs saying no junkmail, leaflets etc get nothing from me.  It's no hardship to leave them alone really is it?

Split decisions..... I guess it is not buying or selling at the end of the day but offering a service.

If some custys take offence to the door knock - so be it.  Funny how they do have dirty windows now you mention it

I see these signs as a gentle but firm KEEP AWAY. A dog will growl to warn you off, we as humans are a more developed breed and are able to convey our messages differrently.

Some people like to be left alone...some folk may be grumpy, some may be a bit strange, some  may well have had some kind of trauma in the past and can't handle people knocking the door.

Whatever the reason, to my mind they didn't go to the trouble of writing these signs for the fun of it. Do you guys not also advertise in newspapers and phone books etc? If so, consider why you do this. It is to attract people who are actively looking for the services you are providing. I.E. the very same people who ask people not to call at the door offering their products and services. They will find you if they want you. The reason these people probably don't have clean windows could well be because they don't like people on their property cleaning them.

And if they are the 'sort' to display these notices, are they the 'sort' who you'd really want to work for? There are plenty more fish in the sea.

I think in all fairness what they don't want are people trying to sell double glazing, insurance, change the gas/lecy provider, druggies selling over-priced dusters etc etc...

Offering a window cleaning service is different as there's no foot-in-the-door. Just a simple question requiring a simple yes or no, and if "no" you don't return!

When I started out I had zero hesitation on knocking on these doors and never got an "eff-off" or a finger pointing to the sign.

Yes, the sign may well not have been written to exclude people offering window cleaning services, but they again they may have been. For me i wouldn't waste my time trying to find out.

Funny you say that, the last window cleaner i spoke to was as high as a kite. Its a wide-spread problem which isn't just confined to duster vendors.  :

We knock like some of you have said it is a service, it is not a "legal sign"  so ignore it  

They can not even say your trespassing go away (not an offence unless you cause damage)

most people are not in but have them on the door, if no answer drop it a leaflet

One is face to face and the other is posting a leaflet and leaving.
If they don't want the door bell going and a face to face chat then expect some justified rudeness coming your way.

I take the same view really.  If I get other work in the street, they should see me working eventually and hopefully realise that I'm a bona fides w/cer.  I'm in the business of cleaning windows.  I'm not in the business of peeing people off (though I occasionally seem to manage it without trying    ).
I used to deliver leaflets for a mortgage broker.  I was very strict about avoiding places with "no junkmail, no leaflets" notices.
I do draw a distinction between "no callers" and "no leaflets".  "No leaflets" get a knock but no leaflet.  "No callers" just get a leaflet.  Signs stipulating both get no leaflet or knock.  That's their right to privacy.  I reckon it would be wrong of me to breach it.

Most have these stickers, if i dont knock, i lose out...so i knocked and got most on my books....hell , they are everywhere. why would i leave all those juicy houses out??

Its another security measure which most people do , these days... out of caution.

People sell at the door, we dont.

plumbers dont,

gardners dont.

its a service, and most of these people welcome a window cleaner,

even just to have the number ,in case there existing cleaner stops calling.
