although not in the window cleaning business, I cant believe this one for moaning when she didn't pay 15k for the work in the first place, my god, then disputed it for 5 years. How can you moan about the standard of a job when it isn't complete and you haven't paid for the job to be completed. The guy was obviously decent enough to start the job and allow her to pay it in stages.

One thing I cant believe at times is people who don't pay you, there moral compass must be way south. I had one the other day who called me back after a year, 'I owe you a fiver from last year I was just wondering if you could come back out'. obviously had my number and wasn't bothered until her windows where thick with muck again. "Not a chance missus".

seems fair enough, you agree to do a job for X amount and you don't get paid, you take your material and go home.
 with window cleaning you take the dirt away, if you don't get paid, you put it back. that's fair, right

I cant believe she said' its tens of thousand pounds of damages now', if I was the new reporter I would have been tempted to say 'well since you never paid for it in the first place, your not really out of pocket are you, reuse some materials there are your probably still quids in.'

In theory I agree-  he didnt get paid, so fair enough.

Then I read it - it was £15,000 total and he had been paid something like 3/4 of it. So he caused all that damage for just £3750.

Maybe not so fair enough - especially if there really were probs? Money shouldnt be witheld for the work taking longer IMO however if it was shoddy or below standard I too would be tempted to pay part but not all.

Not sure who's side i'm on!!

I would handle that differently.  I would insiston being paid at the full first clean rate (and would tack a bit on top) plus the fiver I was owed and full payment must be made in advance or, in the case of a cheque, be clear in my account before touching her windows.  I would then do the clean.  THEN I would dump her.

I am sure there is, but you have to admit some people will try and con you at every opportunity, I've met a few that are unbelievable, and certainly wouldn't want to be involved in 15k transactions with them.

Although he obviously lossed his temper with the situation, I don't think it would be in any way unfair, is he removed the entire extension, returning it to its previous condition and refunding them any partial payments they made. The last thing I would want to see is people getting away with refusing to pay.

I have heard a few window cleaners being owed a fortune from large jobs and getting shafted.

I don't waste my time with people like that. At the time I went back out to her on about 3 seperate occasions, and on the last her car was in the drive. There is better people out there to spend my time on. I would only break even with her as well taking into account the time spent trying to collect.

On reflection you make a good point.  £5 is a cheap price for a bit of peace.
