i know everyone says not to use these products on stains etc because it can make them worse.

what sort of stains does it make worse? and how does it actually make them worse?

Funny you should mention, I had a lip stick removal job today on a sofa, it was cancelled because she used 1001 or something... :
She asked me why I shook my head and I told her about the time my motors suddenly stopped working thanks to a large intake of foam that even my de-foam didn't manage to tackle. All thanks to the sort of crap you've just mentioned. It also carries on attracting dirt as no one ever rinses it out. It's the devils work IMO!!!!

so it doesn't actually make the stain worse, have i heard wrong. it can just brake ya machine with big intakes of foam.

They do work of course, otherwise they wouldn't be on the market place, however they leave sticky residues behind (rapid re-soiling) and can cause major foaming problems which, like has already been said, can damage vac motors.

We used to tell our customers not to use it, but after thinking about it, it's why we are there most of the time, so we say use it as much as you like!

Whether it makes stains worse or not I don't know. It depends on the fabric type and stain type I would have thought. I certainly would never turn up to a custys house with a tin of vanish/1001, how unprofessional would that look to your client?

If you're looking for ammunition to give to prospects when discussing stain removal and they mention 1001 or Vanish, I just tell them that it often leaves a sticky residue that attracts dirt! Usually, I clinch the deal

I have seen many many bleached carpets,due to custy using vanish.Soon as you clean them propperly it shows up

The problem is the customers use too much of the product leaving residue and can bleach.

Did a spray tan cleanup in a girls bedroom a few weeks ago, girl had put a towel down to spray herself but the rest of the carpet got covered with a clean bit where the towel was.

Anyway customer tried Vanish on part of it to try and remove it herself, turned pink, then she called me.
Managed to get all the spray tan off but the pink patch remained. She swore she was never gonna use it again.

We have a customer who used Vanish on a stain on her plain beige woven carpet and it left a nasty brown mark that won't come out. When she read the label afterwards it said, 'Do Not Use on Wool Carpets!'
Often the reason fairly routine stains don't come out for us is because customers have used vanish on it, it's lethal.

The " makes it worse " comment is usually due to what we find when we're eventually called to clean the carpet which could be a year later.

As J K says they usually use too much and not having an extraction machine, or spending enough time on blotting up the foam, the remaining foam / residue starts to attract soiling but the area treated is maybe three times as big as the original spill, so incorrect use of the product has " made it worse " and vanish will often bleach carpets.

You often see this where someone has been attempting to clean up stains with little bleached patches all over the place.

Best one we had was when we did all Newcastle Breweries pubs. A big hotel type pub had just had a major refit including the landlords flat on the top floor. Huge place. Anyway the new landlord and his wife moved in with their 2 Yorkshire terriers. They were busy all week getting the place ready and the poor little dogs were left in the flat alone. They urinated 27 times betwen the back door and front door. Brand new wool carpet cost thousands. The landlady rang me after getting my number off the brewery. She told me what had happened and said she had cleaned it ok but couldn't get rid of the smell.
Went to see it and there they were, 27 perfect white circles where she had bleached the carpet with 1001. Thats just soap she says it'll wash out.
Don't know what the outcome was but bet she got a right bollicking off the brewery.

What did you use to get the tan off with?

Just done a f off house with spots all over daughters bedroom carpet (100% wool ryalux), had to tell them nothing I could do.

She said it was a washable spray tan so it came out with a strong dilution of microsplitters, it was 80/20 wool mix.
Also had some success in the past with a few applications of coffee stain remover on similar carpet.

I put it on someones carpet 6 month ago, went back and cleaned the same carpet again and it was rock solid.

I thought the advice was varnish................oh well, insurance co: saw the funny side
