ive just started using a straight line sonic measure. im not sure why. but got it . when using it does look professional. you show the customer measurements o the lcd screen, they cant argue, it saves alot of time in commercial properties and large office corridors. anybody else got on :-*e

very impressive to customer but not very accurate. i now prefer to use the mc and then pace it out for confirmation. i only have the screwfix cheap one though.

I've used one and found it to be unreliable so now I use a tape or a measuring wheel.

I used to use one, but i found that as soon as you get a rather big room they start to lose acuracy!!

When used in bigger office areas, they never worked

I got so fed up that i went back to my tape measure

I took think there rubbish as not accurate and only work up to 40ft or so.  I use a roller wheel for commercial and a tape measure for residential.

Did get to demo a laser measure once which was very acurate over long distance 300ft from memory but at £300 i would need a lot of big jobs to justify the cost.

PS. no matter what I use apart from a tape measure I always wonder how accurate it is over distance.  Especially in the middle of the night working alone....................................

Mine had a range of 30 to 40 feet maximum but for some reason it would measure a 30' room as 7'6" so mistakes were often obvious.  If any thing was in the way of the machine (ornaments, lamps etc) it would throw the reading out and sometimes curtains would do the same.  It would often make bad readings for no apparent reason and it ended up being embarrasing and it would take longer than using a tape.

Perhaps the latest models are more reliable.

Ultrasonic measurers, unlike laser measurers, can be a bit hit and miss because you can't see the point they're measuring to.

For site surveys we use a Leica Disto which measures up to 200m at +/- 5mm. Although they're very good they cost £300 - difficult to justify unless you regularly need to measure over 50m.

I have also used the sonic measurers which i have found inaccurate. Always use a tape measure now. Never go wrong with that.

I use a ultrasonic Compumeter PRO by RYOBI.

Measurement on one side, calc/conversion comp on the other.

Brilliant for domestics and small commercials, accurate for upto 99%measurement accuracy.  I do check with the trusty tape measure and it's not too far out, not enough to make a significant differnce in the price of the job.

good upto 10m, over that then I use the tape measure.

I used one once when an obliging estate agent left one at my house.

It was very impressive for the customer, but the estate agent came back for it.

Went back to pacing, but having done well over 9000 jobs in this game
i usually just have a feel for what is right.

if commercial just add extra 25%.
