A customer has asked me to day to clean her chinese rug.Just a straight forward job but then she told me that her friend had hers cleaned and her carpet cleaner removed the fringe for her.
Can I do the same she asked
Not done this before .
Has any body else attempted it.
Is the fringe woven into the rug or will it seperate or cut off.
It is a basic chinese wool rug.

I would leave well alone.
Why risk it. If the rug 'falls apart' the ball will be in your park.

The chances are it is a difficult process and then I will not risk it.On the other had it may be a simple process as the other cleaner has apperently all ready done it.

Thats why I ask the question.

Its easy to walk away from situations that you are not familiar with, on the other hand it is worth while spending some time checking out the possibility before you just give a NO  to the customer and walk away.

Paul,

On a woven rug the fringe may be an integral part of the rug and should not be cut off.

On some rugs the fringe may be 'tied in' to the web, without being part of that structure and can be removed by carefully cutting each knot.

On the latex-bonded rugs the fringe and web are stitched on as a separate component.

In any of the above cases I would not remove the fringe, but I have many times folded it underneath and secured with carpet tape.

John an alternative I had not thought of ( sticking it with carpet tape) as she may fancy having the fringe back one day.

I agree with what you say Paul, thats why I have a garage full of old rugs , carpet off cuts, sofa fabrics etc which I experiment on all the time. I use them mostly to aid stain removal techniques but I have cut a few fringes off to see the affect.  I guess its your call but I would not risk my insurance on a job that is not worth much.

as John says its all down to the construction but some are simple to remove.

If in doubt contact Alan Harrison at Olney Rugs he will advise you the best route to go as he is the expert in this field.

Sorry, I did not scroll down to see your recomedation, Thank You, and if anybodys wondering why i would want paul the email me, it could be one of  a dozen differant chinese rugs, so there are 20 questions to ask before he sticks the knife in, and somebody just might want to put another fringe back in the future.
