Cleaned the windows, they asked me to call back a little later , I did the next night.
Strange face opend the door, I was told they had moved up north.
So asked if they had left payment ...No was the answer..
So I asked if the new people would like to use my services they said yes so I quoted them an extra £1.50 and they excepted.
The secret is not doing as you like but liking what you do

When we first started and took any work and were a bit naive, a customer refused to pay because she said the previous months clean was awfull.

The next month she didn't pay again because she decided she was going to do it herself.

Things like that don't happen anymore. When it hits you in the pocket and your pride and sincerity gets a bit dented and hurt you learn fast.

Last time someone didn't pay was last year and I was straight with them in that not only would I harass them for the money (£15) but that I would put letters through neighbours doors, which I did, and then harass them every time I was in their area. We didn't get the money though in spite of trying but what we did get was 'posture' which then gets transfered to the the next new customer.

That posture I think means that now we get a better class of customer.

This story relates to a mate of mine who is a carpet cleaner.
He gets a call to go and clean all the carpets in a flat.
When he arrives a nice lady lets him in and during the day makes him a couple of cups of coffee.

When its all finished he makes up his bill and gives it to the lady. She looks shocked, "I'm not paying, I am just the tennant. I moved in to days ago".
She gives him the address of the letting agent. When my mate gets down there they know nothing about it.

But as he told his story to the girl in the office she exchanged glances with the other girl and that look told it all. You could just about hear her say "Oh no, not again"

Apparantly the owner of the flat is a 'foreign business man' and she would try to contact him to find out whether he had authorised it.

Needless to say he never got paid. It was a scam.

So don't get too upset if you get knocked for £10. Its worse for others in other trades.

When I first started I had a small job  (£5), which went 3 months without payment even though I left a note asking for payment on about 5 occasions,
Finally I went round and as I walked up the path I looked up to see the husband sat at his computer in the upstairs bedroom, and I could see the wife in the kitchen as the window was next to the front door.
I knocked on the door and the wife just walked out of the kitchen past the front door and up stairs, At first I assumed she had seen me and gone to get the money, but after a while when she never came down again I began to wonder if something was up, so I knocked again, Nothing. After the fourth knock I decided to go over the road to collect and then come back.
The bloke over the road is a great guy and after a chin wag I made my way to the first house, as I got to the end of his drive I looked up to see her peering around the bedroom door and him keep bobbing his head up to look over the window sill to see if I had gone, so I walked into the middle of the road and stood under a street lamp, as he looked up I gave him a wave. (I'd swear he hit his nose on the sill on the way down)
When I knocked she came down and her first words were "did you not get my cheque with the cancellation letter which I sent a month ago?"
No I said has the cheque been cashed?
erm err
Obviously I never got it then did I.
So she paid up and I walked of laughing my head off.
Now every time I see her I give her a friendly wave and bust out laughing.  ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D

Hi Neil

Does that mean 'only the best is good enough' or similar?
