Conservatory roofs in hot weather (trad)
« on: October 09, 2008, 01:41:03 pm »

OK here's what I've done:

Bunged ladders up and gave a good scrub with loads of water and a non-abrasive scourer. Got custies garden hose and gave it a good rinse down.

It dried with spots everywhere but I told custy that as soon as it rains the white spots will be washed away and it'll be clear.

I have an awful feeling I've told her a load of old bollox....what do you guys say?

Sorry to agree with you Simon but the answer is yes.

If this is a glass con roof it will show up spots from the dried out tap water.

These are a nightmare to do trad unless you are very good with a squeegee on a pole. Have you got any mates with a wfp system? It would take very little time to give it a quick brush and rinse down.

Bugger! So the rain won't wash away the tap water residue?

9ft sheets of glass, almost impossible to blade (and I'm pretty good at it).

Round here in SW London there's absolutely no wfp because of extremely limited parking.

Hmm  I doubt if the rain alone will get rid of the spots.

Perhaps pop round when it is raining pretty hard and give the roof a quick brush over then let the rain rinse it. I would save these jobs for rainy days and you should be fine.

If you have quite a lot of these it could well be worth investing in a cheap backpack from window cleaning warehouse £80.00 ish and a cheap pole and try to find somewhere local to buy pure water when you need it.

Simon, I clean conservatory roofs in the same way, on upvc roofs the customer cannot see how it dries from underneath, as long as I get the dirt and moss off they are happy.

On glass roofs washing off with tap water does not leave any spotting here but I assume that is because I am in a soft water area.
I guess it is the chalk in the water in your area that leaves the residue.

Andrew has given you some good advice.

You can clean a poly roof with a dirty water from a mop bucket and the chances of a custy picking out a fault are rare, but when it comes to the glass roof its a different story?
You can wash the whole lot with tap water but you must finish off with a pure rinse or like andrew said do it on a rainy day if you don't have a mate who can let you have some pure.

Thanks for the advise guys. I think the up-shot is to save my cons jobs for a rainy day...actually this is quite good as normally I don't work in rain.

It's times like these when I wish I could use wfp....oh well!

Simon

Why not buy a small Di vessel, some resin hook up to custy's outside tap. Covert a Harris pole with cheap brush. Cost you less than £100 all in and you are set up to make your money back after two- three roof cleans. Plus you could charge an extra few quid for the bedroom windows above the conservatory :)

Nice idea but to be honest I don't do enough to justify sheppling around more gear. I think I'll just leave the few cons roofs I have to do from time to time for rainy days.
