« on: August 21, 2008, 06:32:59 pm »
i have been asked to quote for about 400m2. Concrete, good drainage, quite green at the moment, but no moss.
Also, they need to have it cleaned on a weekend as it is a carpark.

Any idea on a price?
I have put a price in, but i just wanted to see what you guys thought

cheers

Would have only taken about 4 hours from start to finish on concrete with good drainage so you may have needed to go in at about £1/sq/mtre, just done a huge car park in Cambs in similar condition and I charged them 80p/sq/mtre.  Did about 800sq/mtres per day per person which equates to a good day's wage in anybody's book... even at a weekend.

80P per square meter, I wouldn't have turned my machine on for that.

Look if you are offering a professional service, why go so cheap?

Economies of scale Roger, 4000 square metres is a heck of an area.  At 80p sq mtre I earned over £600 a day profit... not many professionals earn that in a day!

Because of the price, they have asked me to quote for a bigger area now.  If I could fill my year with my supposed 'unprofessional' fee I would be a happy man.

Horses for courses eh?

The way you describe the job We'd have gone in at £1.50 for the first 100 metres then £1 per metre everything over that.

£450 for a day's work is about right, especially as your only direct cost would be fuel for your washer and also travelling.

Andy,
If you get £600.00 on 400 sq.m mts (@£1.50 per sq mt) then that is not bad, concrete good drainage etc.  and a commercial job sound about right.
Your last reply said "4000" sq.mts.
Not questoning your professinoal'ism at all, just that it sets a president, and there are enough window cleaners, gardeners doing what we do as an add-on and for next to no money, and not doing it as good we we do.

I agree with you Roger on most of what you say, however, £600 on 400 sq mtrs which would only take 1 person half a day is an awful lot of money and may be perceived by some (not by me though) as a little over the top.
The job I was referring to in my email was just trying to draw a comparison with the job raised by Richy at the beginning of this topic as they were similar surfaces.
Discussing prices is always a dangerous game on this forum as we all have different needs/wants/ideas on what is a fair price.
My opinion is that earning £400 for half a day's work is a very good amount for a company to be earning.
When I was in IT, my company charged me out at £750 a day which was at the top end of what people were prepared to pay back then (10 years ago).  For us to be able to earn the same as that now in an industry which is generally perceived by the public as a 'lowly qualified' industry is pretty good in my opinion, trying to earn substantially more than that is starting to take the mickey.
Of course, all of our companies need differing amounts of money to survive and make a profit so it is very difficult to say what we 'should' be charging.

You and I have proved to be of a similar mind set in the past and it appears we have a strong wish to improve the professionalism within the industry, this responsibility also entails having a grasp of what is and isn't a fair price for the job in hand.  Charging what equates to £1200 a day for one person is bordering on theft in my opinion and should be discouraged, it only serves to draw less scrupulous and more greedy people into our industry, the industry we are trying to raise the image of.

Just my thoughts.

Didn't get your email, it might be stuck in a junk filter but I do agree with your above statement Andy.
I think the only way you could command £1200 a day would be for 2-3 machines running at the same time, same job and the customer/client is willing to pay.
Day rates in other words.
If it was one man, going out for £1200 a day then that is ripping off the client,

the price per metre can depend on so many variables i.e the equipment you are using ,size of area, drainage, what surface is made of,is there large amounts of gum or staining and also ease of access and any pedestrian traffic that needs directing, me personally have done a number of very large jobs at under 50p a metre and made good money but also had other jobs at £2 a metre and made a lot less.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt
