How do I....??
« on: July 14, 2008, 07:11:29 pm »
Evening all,

Please see attached picture. If you were to clean the windows above the garage using trad methods, how would you do it? (if it is at all possible?)

The picture is for illustration purposes only, however I have had an enquiry for a house very similar and as I am a newbie I thought I would seek the friendly forum's advice!

most here will say

" you should get WFP and ditch ladders "  ::) ::) ::) so ive said it now ;)

anyways,

i would have the ladder right over the top of the window and use a ladder stop, or if the ladder angle is wrong, pull car / van and put ladder against the car / van ( that was your not going anywhere ) remmber safety first

my remark abut get WFP was in jest, as i knew you would get 20 replies all in the same vein, get WFP

you need skill with a pole to use trad tools on them, it doesnt come easy

as i said, just put your car/van on the drive and have the ladder go above the windows

The best and safe way of doing this would be risk ass and if you are NOT happy doing it then dont do it as you can NOT put a price on your life!

I would definitely trad pole them if I had no WFP. Although sitting the top of the ladder above the frame MAY make the ladder angle OK, sometimes on such jobs the lower part of the windows can be quite a reach inwards.  I used to do some similar to that and the only way I could reach the lower part of the window was by placing one foot on the tiles and the other on the ladder.  I never felt particularly comfortable with that but didn't know about trad poling back then.

i've done the parking your vanat the bottom of your ladders in the past. works very well, should use ladder mitts really to avoid damaging the sill

Point ladders on the frame would just about work.  Normal ladders above the frame would just about work but be a bit of a stretch, probably over reaching.  I'd say pole it.

Extension pole, mop first, then blade down, lastly microfiber all over the window.  Once your up to speed it will probably be as fast as ladders if not a bit faster.  I would opt for the extension pole and hope there is no birds muck.

What i USED to do was park on the drive and use my car tyres as a ladder stop,

In my crazy former life i would have stood on the tiles even at that steep angle

hi aqua,

i have houses like this on my round. they are easier than they look. i used to use a double set of 14' ladders with articulated rubber feet n ladder mitts so i didn't damage the pvc above the windows. now tho i use a standoff bracket, i currently use the microlite but are quite expensive at £114, this i have on my double 10' with articulated feet. articulate feet differ in price, i bought some from the fed for £25 a pair, but paid £40 from browns in bradford, tho these ones are of better quality.

the safest way of cleaning these windows would be having them footed you would also achieve the best finish,as opposed to a pole with a mop and squeegee on

well it looks like every one is give advise so i tell ya how i do them.

lean your ladder against the gutter so the top not ersting agains anything make sure ladder is steeper than normal. climb ladder untill your about one or two runs past the gutter then rest your right foot on the tiles this will balance you and give your torso enough strenth to lean in.

sound complercated but by far the easyest, fastest and safest. but as i mentioned b4 you really shouldnt do this unless you have been shown how to.

as for risk ass andy, leave it out son :D you do crack me up ;D

(Tried to put a link in but it wouldn't let me for some reason)

I have these Ladder Legs on the bottom of one of my ladders.
You can use the ladder at silly angles and it won't slip.

I've been WFP for a couple years now but still carry the ladders with these on

'Stabilad' ladder stabilisers are very, very, good for this kind of work. However, these ladder safety devices CAN slip on decking if it's slippery. Decking and slate type ground surfaces are the two hazards I don't trust any ladder safety device to work properly on.

If I was cleaning them windows traditionally, I would rather use my vehicle tyres to foot the ladder than rely on someone to foot the ladder.
