The black stuff from the seals
« on: January 21, 2005, 12:11:22 am »
I've never been able to solve this problem.

I window cleaned on and off from when I was about 20. I'm now 47 and now a full time w/c I've never solved this.

Some frames have seals of rubber around them that leach black from the rubber when it's wetted.

It stains the frames something terrible and makes cleaning the windows etc a nightmare.

Any idea's? Is there a stabiliser or sealant for the rubber seals?

Cheers

I don't think there is a lot you can do about it.

I hate it where it stains your scrim and it never fully washes out

I may be wrong, but I've found that the more modern the windows the less likely the "rubber" is to "leech out" and they don't seem to deteriorate either.

If you use GG4 and have no need to "detail" you could explain to your customers that the reason you don't go around the edges is because you don't want the black stuff messing up their nice white window frames!

Grey cloud - silver lining!

It's a game of three halves!

This is a case of the rubber seals having perished/oxidized, the only way it will stop is if they are ever replaced.
If they are in UPVC windows, should you rub your scrim from the seals and onto the frames you get a horrible black smear that you can't get rid of  :o
By the time you have finished detailing the window there can be black marks all over the frames, can look awful  :-\
I guess you could use something such as T cut to polish it out, but as these seals are almost certainly in pretty old and weathered UPVC frames you would have to do the entire frame Cry Otherwise you will have clean spots all over the place that will look just as bad  >:(

I just tell the customer straight, the seals are shot, nothing we can do Cry I do tell them I could T cut the frames, but I would have to charge them several quid per window, and it won't get rid of the problem of the perished seals.

You just have to be real careful on future cleans and detail with a great deal of care.

I am a WFP'er now, so this is no longer a problem, touch wood, I have had no problems as yet with this method of cleaning those type of seals.

So WFp's don't cause as much problem.

I hate doing those jobs. Maybe pass them onto a WFP w/c as I hate doing a bad job.

I will do that.

Clean the windows as normal. Take your scrubber run round the frame lightly (inch). Take your scraper & push up to seal removing any traces of black. Go round with finger in scrim removing line started by scraper.
