Embroided Cotton Upholstery???
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:15:51 pm »
Job later this week for carpets and upholstery, bit of a distance from me so gave her an estimated guide price on the carpets and would give a price for the upholstery onsite.

When asked about material all she could describe it as was "a sort of Embroided cotton" ???

She wasn't convinced herself when she said it, but if it is what she says.....subject to tests, safe to wet clean???

Thanks Paul

Yes fine to wet clean. Dont over wet cotton and an acidic rinse will help. Do a fibre check to ensure it is cotton or in case its a blend, check for any viscose in it.
They say cooton strengthens when wet but i find that the weak areas ( worn areas/ arm edges etc) become weaker so take extra care on those areas, but cotton is fine to hwe. :)

She might mean brocade. If you have any doubts plaqce some bete curtain over it and hold it down tight and hwe through that. This will avoid any pulling of the fibres.

Paul's advice of using an acid rinse is the traditional well proven route to take.

I would, however, advise a dye test for the acid rinse. In recent years there has been quite a few instances of cotton having a pH sensitive dye. My advice is on arrival to do your normal dye tests but also just dab a little neat acid rinse somewhere out of sight, say a zip panel. Leave it while you get on with the vaccing and set up. You should know within 10 minutes or so if there's going to be a colour change to the fabric. If there is, keep EVERYTHING pH neutral, but still test first.

It's rare, but it can happen.

SAFE and happy cleaning :)

Best advice I read on here was to take everything you are going to use and use it on an area you don't see or the swatch. Then use a hairdryer to completely dry it. Then you know you're OK so long as you dry in a reasonable time.
