A steady mix of commercial and domestic is ideal.
Whilst waiting for the cheques to role in you can live off the cash if youve got enough of it and keep the commercial work payments to go towards your tax bill.

I do domestic only, commercial is too cutthroat, if another w/c undercuts the then the commercial property owner/proprietor goes with the cheap price, In only do 2 comm jobs and both of them are for existing custies.

I now target high end houses only. My new minimum charge is £25... If they ring up asking for a quote I say that I can go and quote them but ask how big there house is and state that I have a minimum charge of £25.

However, when I was first starting out I would take on anything... Although I still had a minimum charge of £10 back then.

I think over a period of time you evolve a preference and start to choose your customers without really even being aware that you are doing it.

You also get a feeling for ones that are going to be bother but like Andy says when you are starting out you will take on anything, and probably learn from it.

In this day and age that is an outrageous thing to say. But it is so so true!!

I have had a maximum of about 5 Asian custy's on my round at any one time:-

1. Poor payer, eventually dropped
2. Poor payer, dropped, begged me to take her back which I did on condition she signed a monthly standing order. She has given me a side gate key for access, sweet as pie now.
3. No problems whatsoever, pays promptly.
4. Poor payer, dropped
5. Very Small Commercial (£20):- I was dropped by her Eastern European husband for a cheaper w/c who didn't turn up. HAHAHA! ;D She was livid with him (her husband) told him off and begged me to go back, which I did for an extra £5. Sweet as can be (and very attractive, which is nice! ;D

So my experience is mixed but I have had a higher proportion of probs so am careful when I am approached.
It's a game of three halves!

I have had about 5 Asian customers on my round, 3 of them are excellent customers who all pay on time, and have been on my round for a few years now,one of the other two was always late paying, so got dropped, the other one didn't pay at all! so also got dropped. I think its a case of taking people as you find them, and as individuals, not as a race!

As for targeting customers, well yes I do now that I have a very full round. I target wealthy areas, and large houses, I also target commercial work especially if it can be done in the early hours or in the evening. I now have a minimum charge for any new customer of £25. And as I take on better jobs, I get rid of some of the lesser work that I took on when I started out.  :)
