stone new builds
« on: March 17, 2008, 02:18:34 am »
Anyone done any new build exterior cleans on a stone house (those big detatched type that are going up with the cream colored stone) ? Not sure how far you can go with pressure before damaging the stone, always dodged them in the past but might need to do this one,
Cant find a decent picture of the stone i mean but this is close, its just big stone blocks really,

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-15021535.rsp/svr/2001;jsessionid=A01D9173AA137444B7265EAAB55BBF9B?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy

Figure low pressure clean/rinse and manual removal of cement snots with a wire brush might be the best way,

any comments?

Steve

Hi Steve

Long time no speak.

Look like nice houses matey, might be worth checking that they are in fact stone and not reconstituted material of some sort (or even concrete made to look like stone), I did a few of these not long ago and they were crushed rocks, reformed to make bricks....

If they aren't stone then treat as normal for the brick cleaning but if they are indeed stone then try some acid on a spare brick if you have one or an inconspicuous spot on the building... let me know how you get on.

Hi andy,

hope your well mate,

Yup pretty sure its stone, its not that particular house but its the closest pic i could find, We get quite alot of them in this neck of the woods I guess their must be a big hole somewhere near by!

Do you think high pressure will the mark the stone block like it does on the (sand?) stone lintels you sometimes see on modern houses?

Will have a go at the acid on a test brick but ideally dont want to use it because there are quiet a few houses to do and i think it might be too time consuming. would you spot treat with the acid or do a wash with it?

steve

Hi Steve

I understand you wanting to avoid the acid, so I would still try to get a spare brick and test different pressures on it, make sure you set your pump to the highest you can before it marks the brick and then off you go... might take a bit longer if the pressure has to be turned down significantly but you can adjust your price accordingly.

Happy cleaning

Andy

Good idea that,

get a spare brick and increase untill damage and turn down a notch, simple! funny how you sometimes miss the obvious!
Well ok, maybe just me  :)

I will be doing a bit next week so will report back, Its a toss up between me and sand blasters apparently!!! But on new builds i dont understand why sand blasters would be wanted?!?!?

cheers

steve

Steve,
You could try Tensid, they have a new product out for new build cleaning it is called safety clean I think, I have one of the testers but not used it yet, speak to Richard Turk at Tensid for more advice.

Thanks roger,

I will look them up and see if they can get some out to me, always worth having another option available.

P.s just so you know, I didnt hear anything back from the email i sent to the hosp in this neck of the woods. Worth a try though, so thanks for the lead.

cheers
